p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 2 Days in Phoenix

I will be in Phoenix,AZ in a few weeks for business and plan to extend the trip a few days for some landscape and nature photography. Obviously not much time and lots of great locations to shoot. I've been to AZ one time previously a few years ago when we visited Sedona and three days at the Grand Canyon. Wouldn't mind going to the GC again, but would like to see Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon but they are a ways from Phoenix.

Is there some good landscape photography areas close to Phoenix? Eastern Arizona?

There are bunches of new trails in Sedona so you can get to some places you couldn't access a few years ago.

Also if you are going soon it's a good time to go to Saguaro National Park for desert photography, the desert will be very green.

The Grand Canyon might be pretty cold. But then again, maybe not.

Monument Valley is quite a drive. If you go to Antelope Canyon- google recent posts on crowds there.

2.5 hours to the west is the KOFA Wildlife Refuge. Rugged mountains and desert scenery.

Forget Jackalope and the hordes. Take a fling on Cathedral Wash in the Lee's Ferry area. http://www.flickr.com/search?text=cathedral+wash+canyon

Shoot the erratic, wind eroded boulders, or challenge the Spencer Trail that leads to fantastic views of the river and gorge below. 1.8 miles out and 1200 feet up.

If you're willing to drive as far as Monument, get a room in Mexican Hat and spend time in Valley of the Gods, Goosenecks State Park, and perhaps up on the plateau (weather permitting) among the numerous Anasazi ruins, many of which are rather cool. (Lime and Road Canyons, The Citadel, etc.)

Boyce Thompson Arboretum is less than an hour east on AZ-60. Plenty of plants, rocks, and desert critters. http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=boyce+thompson+arboretum

Saguaro NP (Western section) is less than two hours south. Classic Sonoran Desert, very pretty if there are some clouds in the sky.... http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=saguaro%20national%20park

Thanks for the suggestions and links! I'm still working on my plan. So many great places to shoot and so little time.

Superstition Mountain is very close, about 50 miles from downtown Phoenix.
