Thanks for the link.

Looks like another very good lens from sigma, though optical performance does take a hit at 600mm (when compared to the excellent performance at 150mm).

Question, does anybody buy this lens for it's performance at 150mm?

I've seen FM members post images with this lens showing the photo details and over 95% of those photos were taken at 400mm or longer with most of the images taken at 600mm.

I would dearly love to see this lens compared to the Canon 100 400 L II with a 1.4 III and a Tamron 150 600. With pics from all three at 600mm, well except for 560 with the Canon. AS well as 100% crops.

I really would have preferred they made it 200-600 or 300-600 and cut back on prices/weight/etc

Too bad that didn't happen.

Same for the 100-400 and Tamron 150-600

Kathy, best I can do for you is a couple with Canon at 560mm:

Interesting. Comparing their charts for the Tamron 150-600 and the Sigma 150-600S, the Tamron appears to have better sharpness (both center and weighted) than the Sigma wide open at 600mm.

Great images, as always. Wish Nikon makes one like this 100-400mm.
Have you looked at the images posted with the review? What's your take on bird images at 600mm posted with the review? They look great considering the price point. Thanks.

This is contradictory to the lenstip reviews.

Great images as always Tony. I finally picked up a Canon 1.4 III for my 100 400, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. There is certainly nothing bright and green around here. It's cold and the only color outside is brown.

I was thinking for the size, weight and price it would be a good step-up from the Tamron. Here are ephotozine's 600mm tests for both. From some of the other tests at f8 the difference isn't really that great. I wonder if the focusing is better, because I don't see how the extra $1000 price tag is justified.

A little snow would be very welcome, picture wise.

Thanks, Kathy. Blowing a gale here as the next rainstorm approaches.

When using your TC, be sure your focus-limiter is not set on FULL, otherwise AF will be painfully slow.

Thanks for the tip Tony. Please feel free to share any tips you wish. You seem to be able to get the absolute most out of any piece of gear you pick up.

Maybe. For large animals, the ability to zoom throughout the range is very useful and very important. I didn’t buy a prime; I bought a zoom partially for that reason. Since birds are available everywhere, we see far more bird photos than other wildlife and those are taken almost exclusively at the long end. Even I shoot birds when there is nothing else to do, but my walls at home are covered with large animals.

I think we don’t see many discussions about the performance at the wide end because many photographers here are interested in birds. Even us large animal photographers tend to be more concerned about the performance at the long end simply because that is the reason for buying a lens of this physical size (e.g. we could buy a much smaller 100-400 if we didn’t think we would routinely need 600). I think we also probably assume that the performance at the long end will be the worst point, even though that may not always be true.

So while the performance at the 150 end was not my first thought when considering this lens, the ability to use it all the way from 150-600 was something I wanted and assumed. Now having seen how this lens performs at the short end, I am thrilled to have prime-like performance from 150-300. That will be useful. I don’t think the performance at the long end is as stellar, but I think the results all the way to 600 will prove more than adequate for my purposes.

Isn't the new 80-400 anywhere close then?

I suppose it is...but I was referring more to Canon's 100-400 mark I. Original Nikon 80-400 was close, price-wise, not performance-wise.
Nikon's 80-400G is at $2700, much more than this Sigma 150-600, not sure if it's as good or better than Canon 100-400 Mk I or MK II.
