Hi I came across this old lens, and I am not sure if it can serve me on my new canon 6D.
It appears that it is not very fast, so that it is not the best lens for dog/kid pictures. Al I right?

thanks for any help!

It has extremely good IQ, but slow AF and no IS. I've owned two of them (regretted selling the first, and then remembered why I did). I don't recall how well it tracked in AI Servo, but it's probably not great. It's an excellent lens for use on a tripod, but not so good for handheld shooting of dogs and kids running around. The newer EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS is about the same price (used) and is probably a better choice for this, as its USM AF system is much better than the old AF on the 100-300L, and its IS often comes in handy. OTOH, for controlled shooting from a tripod, the 100-300L has noticeably better sharpness at the edges and in the corners (which is usually not important at all for family action photos).

To piggyback on what Jim said: I've owned the 70-300 4-5.6 IS he's talking about - great IQ in a small package. However, I don't think the AF speed was that great, at least not for catching kids and pets running around.

I own it. Great IQ, color, contrast and fairly short minimum focusing distance. Great for flowers etc. but not for moving subjects. I have $100 invested in mine and won't be selling it anytime soon.

I agree, but it's significantly better than the 100-300L. OTOH, it's nowhere near as good as a 70-200mm, 70-300mm, 100-400mm, or 300mm L-series lens (but it's way more affordable).

The Tamron SP 70-300/4-5.6 VC is very much on par with the EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS. I prefer the EF, but others prefer the SP.

If you're after a cheap and decent 100-300 try the non-L f4.5-5.6 USM..... It's very cheap and for the money not bad at all. USM is very fast & blur (not using the B word :-) ) has a nice look. I still use mine sometimes and it's from 1994 ish.

Hi, I found an old 70-210mm 3.4-4.5 usm. Is this comparable to the 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM ?
Thanks
