It has extremely good IQ, but slow AF and no IS. I've owned two of them (regretted selling the first, and then remembered why I did). I don't recall how well it tracked in AI Servo, but it's probably not great. It's an excellent lens for use on a tripod, but not so good for handheld shooting of dogs and kids running around. The newer EF 70-300/4-5.6 IS is about the same price (used) and is probably a better choice for this, as its USM AF system is much better than the old AF on the 100-300L, and its IS often comes in handy. OTOH, for controlled shooting from a tripod, the 100-300L has noticeably better sharpness at the edges and in the corners (which is usually not important at all for family action photos).
