p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New 70-200mm f/4, noisy IS

Hi,

I've just received a Canon 70-200mm f/4L. Mounted to either 6D or 7D, both set to back button focus, the IS engages and is quite loud, and takes some time to settle down. With each body it's different.

On the 6D I press BBF to focus and while holding down the button after a few seconds it settles down, but half press of shutter to gain exposure settings it will continue to churn as long as I hold down the button.

On the 7D, BBF does not settle but continues to whirl away as long as the button remains pushed. Shutter experience is the same with both bodies. None of my other lenses is like this. Is this normal?

Love the sharpness though, I'm going to like this lens!

Thanks in advance.

OK, maybe I should have used "the google" before posting, apparently this is both normal and alarming for new owners. Not exactly the perfect lens for video, glad I didn't buy it for this purpose.

Move along, nothing to see here

I'm not sure what you mean when you say, "it settles down". If it goes quiet, then the IS has turned off. Put it to 200mm and see if the image in the finder goes from 'solid' to kind of moving around, when it "settles".

IS on the 70-200/4L IS isn't loud in comparison with older lenses, but it's louder than my newer lenses. It sounds extra loud when you fire it up indoors.

On my 6D, the IS remains active as long as I hold down the back button AF and as long as I hold down the shutter button. That would seem to be the same as you get on your 7D. My 1DX and 1DIV behave this way, too. I had a quick look at the 6D menu and couldn't see anything that might affect the IS in the way you describe, if it's actually turning off while the back button is still engaged. OTOH, there are many camera settings that can affect how AF and IS behave.

Great lens but yes the IS is a bit loud. Enjoy your new lens.

It's a very sharp lens (except at 200mm MFD).
The IS system is not only loud, it's pretty loose inside the lens. If you shake is a little you will see what I mean.
It's my favorite landscape compression tool.

^^ Wow, beautiful colors and composition!

Yeah, it's a freaking coffee grinder, a power tool, the un-wildlife lens I'll get used to it, the initial alarm bells went off because it's new. It is very sharp, I'm looking forward to subjects more interesting than my office closet.

Thank you all for your comments and helping to allay my concerns.

Just out of curiosity, why buy the 70-200 f4 is when the 70-300 has the much improved IS system, along with another 100mm in a smaller package for similar money? It also has been measured as sharper in some reviews although neither lens is lacking. Just genuinely curious. I believe the 70-300 is 5.0 at 200mm so not much of an aperture penalty.

I had that lens and sold it here. That was one sharp lens. That and the 300 f4L IS was my bird photography starter kit. Yes, the IS is loud (normal), sounds like a rolling ball bearing or something. I kept the 300 and that is a lens I honestly can say would be hard to part with.

The 70-300/4-5.6 L IS is 38 % heavier than the 70-200/4L IS, for one reason. The "70-200" is longer but has a smaller diameter, resulting in slighlty less enclosed volume for the 70-200, in comparison with the 70-300 when 'closed-up' at 70mm.

I use the 70-200/4L IS with SL1 (and 1.4x III) for travel. I don't know what "generation" the 70-200/4L IS image stabilizing system is, but it's noticeably better than the old versions used in the 300/4L IS and 100-400L IS.

I own the 70-300mmL as well. Wonderful lens, one of my favorites. Reasons justifying the 70-200mm are well stated above, weight and aperture. If I weren't planning on the 100-400mm I would have been perfectly happy with the fatty zoom, but it will be sold. I would have preferred the f2.8 version but for weight, and with ISO performance of 6D I feel I can get away with the narrower aperture.

Edit: another reason - support across all of my lenses for Canon 1.4x teleconverter.

I suppose loud is relative, but I've not found the 70-200/4 IS to be terribly noisy for a tele zoom. It is not as quiet as the latest lenses with the newest type of IS.

The 70-200 4L IS is one of my favorite landscape lenses but, yeah, sounds like a coffee grinder when next to my head.
