So I have been looking through the forum and don't think I found an answer to something specific about my situation (doesn't mean it's not there, just didn't find it).

I have some photo equipment that I insurance under a floater policy (i.e. inland marine) with the same carrier that does my homeowners. Speaking to my agent, he advised that it covers perils basically under the homeowners but slightly larger in scope (lesser deductible as well). What it does not cover is accidentally dropping and causing damage.

Also, under my homeowners, I have insurance for camera equipment I rent with the deductible and perils I have covered for my home, meaning things like fire. Also does not cover accidentally dropping and causing damage.

My situation is that I rent equipment and, obviously, am responsible for it. This particular case, to the tune of $4,500. Again, neither of my policies cover accidental drops.

I am not a professional. Advanced hobbyist maybe. That being said, my biggest concern is that I drop rented equipment and am responsible for it. Not that I'd be happy with dropping mine, but at least I wouldn't owe someone $4,500.

Any thoughts on where to obtain such insurance? Thanks.

Typically most "rental" providers also offer insurance....best check with who your renting with and confirm...or find a different place to rent.
There are several of the outfits that rent and are part of this forum...and offer great service and assistance to the renter. Here are a few to consider:

Note: quick listing...if I missed someone...not done on purpose...!!

I recommend looking very closely at your current policies to determine exactly what they do and do not cover.

Also, Rod's advice on getting the optional insurance from the rental company is a good one.

onesickpuppy - I have rented from those on line (lensrentals) and do like the service and insurance. Currently I work in NYC and go to Adorama Rentals and pick up. This saves me on shipping. However, they do not have insurance and leave the replacement cost on my card until returned and checked out for no damage.

You'd be surprised how cheap the shipping is....well worth the peace of mind

onesickpuppy - I can't argue that one! Glad the bear stuck with the camera and didn't follow you.

I did a quick comparison between where I went compared to one of the on-line rental places mentioned. For a 7d mark ii I was able to get the camera for $50 for a 3 day weekend. That compares to $111 from the internet. $17 of that was for accident and theft insurance so $94, which includes shipping cost. That being said, it only takes one time (or one bear) and that savings is useless. Not that I rent much, but need to give this some thought.

Thanks!

I'd say your insurance is not the best. Isn't that what insurance is about - accidents. I'd say read the policy and not to ever rely on what an Agent says; only the terms and conditions matters. You may find that it indeed covers this situation. If it truly does not cover it, then I'd say purchase it from the rental company.

Check with St. Farm or some other larger insurance company. I have St. Farm and the only thing it does not cover is normal wear and tear. It even covers insurance for when I ship my equipment to CPS, which keeps shipping cost down.

Just a tip. Don't use a rider insurance on your homeowners insurance - always keep it separate. You don't want to file a claim against your homeowner's insurance for camera equipment. Leave that for major catastrophes.
