No. During an autumn fungus foray in a local wood, I found this example of Tubulifera arachnoidea posing for me. For a previous topic about this species see:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1316444/0

Note the bonus beetle larva.

EM-1, Kiron 105mm, twin TTL off-camera flash, hand-held.

Thanks, Douglas.

Although they are called slime mould, they are more animal than fungus, Protozoa.

As I understand it, we are concerned, for photogenic colonies, with the plasmodial group:

Who knew fungi could be so beautiful. Most fungi I see are pretty disgusting.
I'll have to look closer next year when I'm out.

Thanks, everyone.

Those that are ugly have a fascinating quality. It often pays to go in close, with either a macro lens or a hand magnifier.

The next topic will have a rather different approach but will have to go in the Wildlife forum, rather than macro, as will become evident tomorrow.

Fascinating harold. The beetle larva gives me some scale. Nice job with the lighting. Have your tried bouncing the flash off a reflector or umbrella to soften the edge?

Thanks, Morris.

Yes, it was something like an inch across. It as the only colony present.

On the first two forays I lost two flash diffusers, torn off by bramble thorns without me noticing. We don't just walk up to the fungi across clear ground but have to push through a lot of scrubby bushes. Umbrellas would be totally impractical. There is often not enough room for the camera with two off-camera flashes, such that I have to use just one on an L-bracket or even on the hot shoe.

In any case, it was a guided foray, with experts identifying specimens on the hoof. Some concession was made to my photography but it was not a photographic event.

At other times I can take as long as I like but many of the mushrooms will remain un-named, as I will be by myself or with my wife. Of course when such short-lived species are ripe for photography is not often when I have the time to optimise lighting. I am considering culturing the slime moulds in captivity, so that I can give the shots some studio treatment.

Thanks, Birdie.

The organism chose an excellent position, on the top of the remains of a tree stump, the stump on a small hillock, thus permitting a wide choice of shooting angles. This contrasts with my previous encounter, on the side of a low, horizontal log, several feet out, over a pond with deep, stinking mud, leaving me little choice.
