We have had some nasty cold weather the past few days. Maybe a hot red flower will help.

I really like this, Jim!

You've got some beautiful reds in there.

The nit in me would like to see some burning on the left and dodging on the right to balance out the image.

Cheers,

Jeff

Jeff, correct. This is really intended to be a vertical with the left side up of course. I just displayed as a horizontal because verticals just don't display well on monitors.

Jim,

Check your top left corner ... looks like some stray magenta.

Beautiful shot. I'd still be tempted to darken the brighter edge to complete the feeling of mystery in this one.

Wow! Nice one Jim!

Works much better as a vertical!
I would agree with Kent that's ranging too far into magenta-land in the top corner. The tones of red are great.
I'm sure it looks beautiful as a print or on your monitor, but I'm seeing some jpg artifacts at this size it looks like. Not quite looking sharp....

What was your lighting? Speedlight from behind the flower?

Appealing way to say "red".

Thanks for all of the comments.

John, yes this is backlit. This is just a playing around experiment. I am not sure if a print will work. I am curious to give it a try but I put my printer into storage with solvents and need to spend a day bringing it back to life. The first issue will be the colors. Pigments on a print are not going to glow to duplicate the effect of viewing on a monitor. I might try a metallic paper but that is still going to fall a long way short. Next is the issue of softness. The source is clear. This is a tight macro, probably pretty close to a full 1:1. The DOF was very limited and the flower was pretty thick. I might try to fix a couple of the annoying blurry areas with Photoshop, but this will never have an overall crisp, sharp appearance. I did hit it with some edge sharpening software. That sort of helped but introduced some artifacts which are visible even on the downsized version.

I don't worry about the sharpness, maybe going to some (slight) additional blur / NR to "run with" / smooth out artifacts ... staying in the soft vibe. The shape, form, hue, tonal values are strong enough that details, shmetails (says the detail junkie), who needs 'em?

It is a lovely and engaging abstract that at first glance is a bit "What is it", quickly becoming "Oh, I know what that is ... how cool."

+1 what Kent said - push the abstract nature of this one and don't get hung up on the standard technicals.

Gorgeous stuff Jim.
Abstract is the way to go, as Jeff/Kent said.

After a few hours of work I got the cleaning solution out of my Epson 3880 and loaded up new cartridges with Inkjet Mall inks. This image printed really well, way better than I expected.
