p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Purchase choice - D610, D750, D5500

I have shot different cameras/lens over the years, both Canon and Nikon. I started with Nikon film and moved to digital with the D70. In more recent years, I worked for a studio who only shot Canon, I switched for a couple of years. After parting ways, I came back to my roots with Nikon as they just feel more intuitive and comfortable to me. I actually sold the 5dmk3 and bought a Nikon D5200 a couple of years ago and that is what I still shoot. The weight of the 5dmk3 really bothered my neck and I hated the way it felt in my hands. I wanted a lighter weight option that still had a decent sensor. That is the history.

Currently I am looking to upgrade a bit. I am shooting more indoor sports than ever before and the D5200 AF just doesn't cut it. I am looking at the D610 body only and the D750/24-120 combo. However, I am also looking at the new D5500 but that probably wouldn't buy me anything AF wise. However the D5500 would also allow me to pick up the Tamron 150-600 which I would love to have. My budget is 3K but would like to stay under if possible. I am also open to selling some stuff as well. Thoughts?

Lenses I have are: (FX) Nikon 60mm macro, Nikon 70-200 - (DX) Sigma 8-16, Nikon 35 1.8, Nikon 18-105

surprised you didnt mention the D7100 there.. The AF system is significantly better than the D5200 and you already have some DX lenses. The D750 would also be nice but you would have some significant gaps to cover with your current lens arsenal and would potentially have to sell off your DX lenses.. unless you want to shoot in crop mode..

for about $750 you could get into a D7100 used now.. perhaps you could do a week long rental and check it out..
Out of the three you mentioned, the only one that will give you any solid darker indoor AF performance is the D750

I usually don't recommend gears to anyone because I have been burned once at Pop Photo, but since you have already did a really good analysis on what you need, it really makes things easier.
Sell your D70, Sigma 8-16mm DC, Nikon 18-105mm DX and pick up the D750 with the 24-120mm kit and if you still have a little cash to spare, pick up a 1.4x TC III to give you all the coverage you'll need for the time being. Later on you can pick up a wide angle to give you back your 12mm coverage.

Welcome to the I AM FULL FRAME EXPERIENCE and follow the trend forward.

Note: For the upcoming Advance Software Update Program (AS...UP), none of the DX models were selected (Advance Software DX None, AS... DN), this really tells you where Nikon is heading.

FX is bigger sensors, full 35mm image circle lenses, more weight. Since you explicitly mention the desire to keep weight below that of your previous Canon 5D MK3 kit I think looking into a D7100 (or D7200 when it is released) would be inmteresting. Keep the 70-200 and add a 1,4x TC.

You would save a lot of money that way.

Since Nikon seems to focus on FX you can think ahead, in which case the D750 seems to vbe the ticket (smaller and lighter then D810 but with faster AF then D610).

In that case consider selling the 70-200 f2,8 in favor of a 70-200 f4 (straight swap) but keep in mind that you lose a lot of range (DX to FX and even slower maximum aperture when using TC's). Alternatively, if you DO need more range then 200mm on an FX camera consider selling the 70-200 f2,8 for a Sigma 120-300 f2,8 but accept that the overall weight and size of your kit will increase significantly.

For the weight requirements you mention staying with DX would not be a bad idea at all, in which case the D7100 would be a really good choice. Staying with that scenarion, pick up a used D7100, keep the 70-200 f2,8 and buy 1,4x and 2x TC's. See if you like the results, and if you don't, sell the used D7100 with little to no loss and pick up a D750 that you can use with the 70-200 f2,8 and TC's (and use the 1,2x crop mode)

Assuming you go with FX, I would go with D6100 and use the difference (from D750) for the lens you want. D610 AF is pretty good although not as good as D750.

Agree with others that a look at the D7100 is a splendid idea, and not as costly. Next is the D610 too, which is on your short list.

I use the D5200 as well, and the 5500 looks to be a pretty pointless upgrade unless you really need integrated wifi or a touch screen. The D610 would give you some advantages, (dual cards, weather-sealed, larger pixels), but I'm pretty sure it either has the same AF system as the D5200 or very similar. The D7100 has an AF system which is much better than the D5200, but not quite as good as the D750, and IQ roughly the same as the D5200. If you can spring for the D750, you'll get the most improvements, but if you just need better AF the D7100 will suit you fine.

Thank you for all the thoughts. I know you can't make this decision for me but it really does help working through the process by hearing others opinions and suggestions.

I have had a bunch of cameras and lens combinations over the years. Because I "needed" them all? Well, no. I am a big tech person. My dream job would be somewhere where I could see cutting edge tech all the time without having to "buy and try." Camera body past: N80, D70, D200, D300, D5100, D7000, 5dmk2, T3i, 5dmk3, D5200. Of these my least favorite were the D300 and D7000 with the D7000 being a body that I absolutely hated. I loved the D200 and skin tones. It was amazing and ahead of it's time. I expected the D300 to elevate things to the next level. Nope, my D300 overexposed compared to the D200 and skin tones were not nearly as favorable. I really liked the D5100 but didn't like the AF. I thought the D7000 was would be fantastic. Mine was not. I sent it to Nikon for service 3 times. It had horrible back-focus issues that I felt were never corrected properly. I think that is why I shy away from the idea of the D7100. The 5dmk2 was great! i loved the FF body, especially for portraits. However, I did miss the reach of the crop body so I picked up the t3i and had both. The 5dmk3 was a nice camera, image quality was good but it felt awkward in my hands from day 1. I really did not like the weight and that is the #1 reason I chose the D5200.

I have shot professionally, but now due to other life circumstances, mostly shoot personal stuff only taking the occasional job. I shoot a lot of sports, both in bright light and in poor high school gym lighting. I also shoot landscape, and portrait in studio and out. I think what I really want doesn't exist and that is a light weight body with professional AF. I also like FF and crop both equally, depending on the job. If I only keep one, I think it would be a FF body. Although I could keep the D5200 as a back up.

I am leaning toward the D750 but what about the light leak issue? The D610 seems like a solid choice also but what does it's AF most compare to?

If the d610 has AF like my D7000 did then it is absolutely off my short list.

The D750 and D7100 are exactly that, obviously with different sensor sizes. Ideally, you could get both for the different scenarios when you enjoy FF vs crop.

d610 and D7000 are almost the same one is FF and one is crop.

D7100 and D750 are close to the same as well one is FF and one is crop. (i know the 750 supposed to have bit better AF I"m taking in general terms).

Since it sounds like you you could use multiple bodies crop and FF and we just can't make that on your budget, I would say get the D750.

I will say the D610 is great and saves you a grand, but since you want the best AF I will not suggest this. I never had issues, but I don't' do much sports.

Key points:
AF is high on your list. This camera has great AF.
Its small for a full frame
New features that could be handy wifi to your phone and screen tilt
Good in low light
nikon said they will fix the flare issue if your camera has it, I"m not for sure but a lot of people haven't ran into that while actually shooting by what I read.

I think I like that idea. I could pick up the Tamron 150-600 at a later date.

I also started in film and after a few decades got a D70 (the 70s) then eventually wound up with a D5100 - I now have a D610 and it revitalized my photography AND my interest in photography. I will wait for the next model after the D750 but without question, you should go to the D750.

The kit 24-120 is a very good lens. The next step up in IQ is a pro zoom which will not cover that range or a set of primes. The AF speed and IQ on the 70-200 pro zoom is said to be exceptional.

Once you get a FF body you may rethink the IQ on the Tamron and check the AF speed also. IIRC, it is slow.

So, buy the D750 kit now, try it out with the various lenses and then sell the least impressive and/or least used lens. Then the next...

Be sure to always shoot raw - I'd turn off jpg before I turned off raw if the processing engine in the body slows down your frame rate.

It also sounds like you shoot some macro, but the 60 AF-D is about as good at macro as the AF-S, so I see no need to sell it. Unless.... you are like me and want the wonderful focus throw of the MF lenses. I sold my AF-D 60 and bought a MF 55/3.5 and am very happy with that decision.

I would suggest the D750 then for you. Forget about the light leak issue, it is well blown out of proportion. It can happen in the occasional shot from what I have read, but many people trying to force it to happen can't get it to happen. One thing I do know, shooting with a light source on the edge of the frame can cause troubles with any camera body. Usually it ends up being horrible lens flare in the shot, but there should always be care used. So in this case with the D750, being educated is the key. If I wasn't sold on my 36mp cameras I know I would own a D750 as one of mine.

Do you not like zoom lenses? I would get the D750 + 24-120mm combo. I have the 24-120mm I always have it on one of my camera bodies. I primarily shoot wide angle, so most often I have the 14-24mm or 16-35mm on and shooting. But when I hike around or scout around, it's the 24-120mm I have on since it's so versatile.

I will wait until Monday to think about it a bit more but I do believe I will get the D750 and yes, I planned to get the kit with 24-120. When I had the 5dmk3 I used the 24-105 a great deal. I will keep the 70-200 and the 60mm macro. I have seen some decent shots with the Tamron 150-600. I think it depends on the copy and photographers skill level using a long lens. I have a friend who just picked it up a couple of weeks ago and may borrow it for a day to see.

I predict that you will be thrilled with the D750 - but post how you like it when you get one
