That really sucks-- particularly the notes!
Last summer I had a reporting job in Mongolia, and after the first week in the field with some scientists, as I headed back to the capital, someone lifted my notebook out of my pocket. Zero money, and worthless to anyone on the planet but me. But to me it was very, very valuable. I'd have rather lost money.
I guess there are a couple lessons:
1. Don't leave stuff in cars, visible or not, good area or not.
2. Be mindful not only of apparently valuable things (camera/wallet), but things of little value to others that happen to be with apparently valuable things and are therefore likely to get grabbed as collateral theft.
