p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking for help shooting curling

My club is hosting a 40 team bonspiel (tourney), I was asked if I would be interested in shooting it. Never done curling before but have done some hockey. I feel I normally struggle with exposure in hockey..

Shots will be combination of 4 person team group shots indoors and ice level action shots.

I am thinking about renting a 70-200 2.8 for the action shots on the ice and using my 60 mm 2.8 for the group shots.

What advice would you have?

One advantage you have is it is a slower so high ISO and high shutter speeds are not necessary. If the lights are of the same color use a cwb Of the ice. If not use flash(s). Do get as low as possible to the ice. Try to shoot from the ice sheet not the stands. Gerry

Your first advantage is that you know the game. It took me a while to get comfortable with shooting curling because I didn't understand what was going on.

It's very easy to get comfortable and shoot only one aspect of the game. I get bored very easily if I don't move around between ends and try to shoot the event from as many different angles as possible.

You will know this, but obviously don't move while the rock is being thrown.

Really there is a lot of time to try and get your shot. For example, if you are trying to get a good panning shot you have 16 opportunities to get your timing down during each end. I tend to put aside an end or two in the middle of a match and dedicate it to just panning, by the time it gets to the skips for the last 4 rocks you should have your timing down.

I will also shoot from the behind the hack (end) straight down the ice. If you do two ends you can get shots of the action moving away from you and towards you.

Shooting along the hog line with a longer lens you can get some shots of the curlers calling out to teammates or staring intensely.

Maybe use an end to find a different/more original angle.

Or capture some details.

Like any other sport, don't forget the celebrations! Curlers tend to show very little emotion during a match, but watch for it when it happens.

And don't forget the crowd! There's nothing quite like curling fans.

capitalK - awesome set and a nice variety showcasing the sport of curling.

The fan dude looks like Tim McGraw playing a bearded Elvis.....just saying.

Thanks for sharing!

Nice of you to say, thanks.

Although the men's shots were taken in an arena with great lighting, the women's shots were taken in a dark curling club that is probably more typical of the average event.

Thanks for the pointers. Great shots! What events were these from?
I really loke the panning shot of Jacobs as well as the shot of his facial expression.

The men's photos are from the National, a Grand Slam of Curling event last November at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.

The women's event was the 2014 Ontario Scotties held at the Soo Curlers club in Sault Ste. Marie.

It doesn't hurt when you live in the reining Olympic gold medalists' hometown, means I get to shoot quite a bit of curling.

As far as lenses, a 70-200 f/2.8 will serve you well. I mostly use a 135mm f/2 or a 300mm f/2.8 IS.

When I am shooting down the sheet from behind the hack I might throw and extender on the 300. Without looking at the EXIF data I imagine the shot of Jacobs's facial expression was probably taken with the 300mm with 2x TC (600mm total).

This one would be great in the "show us your best panning shots" thread (sports)

Would appreciate if you could post it in there

and from the EXIF, capitalK's panning shot is at 1/10-sec. Impressive, along with the rest of the set!

If I remember correctly, this one was shot at 1/5th of a second with no monopod.

That's another suggestion... Use a monopod if you want to do panning, you'll probably get more keepers than I did.
