p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 7D II + 100-400 II or A6000 + Sony 70-400mm/G2 or A6000 + Tamron 150-600mm | |
[I'm duplicating this post from the Alt forum based on a suggestion from another member.]
I'm hoping to get into wildlife photography, both mammals & birds. The most realistic choices for me appear to be:
1. Use my A6000 with either the 70-400mm G2 or the Tamron 150-600mm. Although a lot of people seem to like the Tamron, from the samples I've seen, I'm not entirely thrilled, even though it's half the price of the Sony.
2. I'm quite familiar with the Canon, so that would be my other choice. A 7D Mk 2 + 100-400mm II.
The advantages of option 1 would be:
- I would think that the A6000 would be good for BIF and action given it's good FPS and AF tracking.
- I don't need to buy a new body (unless you guys think the A6000 is not appropriate for wildlife and should, instead, consider the A77 II)
The advantages of option 2 would be:
- There's a lot more on the net on this body & lens combination, and almost uniformly praised and well-liked. So you can't go wrong with this choice.
- With the body you can use the 1.4 TC to get 560mm reach, which I can't get with the Sony system, even if I do decide to buy the A77 II.
- I get IS with this system over the Sony, unless I buy the A77 II body to pair it up with the 70-400. This could be a biggie, as with a big lens like that I think IS would be critical for my style of shooting.
So, the considerations/questions are:
1. If stabilization is a dealbreaker for me (although I'm persuadable either way), then my best bet is to go with the Canon, or buy the A77 II.
2. If I have to buy a new body, what's the advantage of the Sony over the Canon? My sense is the latter is a better combination.
3. In terms of IQ, does the 100-400 II have the edge over the 70-400 G2?
4. Should I give Tamron a serious shot before dismissing it?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
