Thai Likay Performer - 5D3 with a 70-200 f2.8L.

Pronounced 'leg-gay', these shows derived from Chinese opera, or Malay jikey depending on who you ask, run into the wee hours - or even dawn.

They are more often than not financed by wealthy local landlords or business owners - as this one was - wanting to give something back to the community.

These shows are heavy on drama and song, they retell stories keeping oral and performance history alive.

Not the most lyrical of shots - I was simply happy to finally see some likay live.

Likay, to most Thai teens, is quaint, old hat, and very uncool to say the least. Tempering the seriousness of likay performances, troupes will often first please the younger crowd with cabaret style song and dance as seen in the 2nd shot.

As much as I enjoy shooting events here, the spread of cheap LED stage lighting is a real nuisance. You often have to time it just right to get a frame in which skin tones can be rendered somewhat normal in PP - the flash of the white spot across the performers. Even then sometimes things may have to lay as they do.

Prior to the show beginning, the female, or generally considered to be, dancers dance to honour the deities in a local shrine.

The dancers are then awarded money in red envelopes by the man who commissioned the troupe to perform.

A fine shot Paul, and the cultural context tidbit is very much appreciated.
Westerner like to take/collect photos of exotic places and faces, yet it is not often that their understanding of scenes and peoples photographed is conveyed.
