p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A brief look at 1DX high ISO...

Over the holidays I was out shooting birds when the light turned awful. I decided to try and push the ISO up to values I rarely use to see how it would perform. Here are a few examples and some 100% crops. You can make your own judgement of how well they look for your own standards. I processed them in LR only. Used selective sharpening and NR via masking and adjustment brush.

Feel free to post any high-ISO examples that you may have in this thread if you wish to.

1) 12,800

2) 100% crop of above

3) 25,600

4) 25,600

5) 100% of above

The first shot looks good to me Geoff, the ones at 25600 would not work for me except as a documentary shot. Thanx for posting ~ Ron

That looks really good, Geoff.

Most of my 1DX high ISO shots are at low light events. I don't try to show them with "correct exposure" (i.e. average middle grey), but keep it dark, just like being there, and so they look quite different. I usually don't post images of people, but I can probably get away with this one. The first image is the whole photo and the second is a 100% crop. No PP, at all.

Looking good Jim at 12,800. Keeping the dark look probably helps a bit.

Great shot Rob at 25,600. That one looks really good. Did you process it much?

Ron, I think I agree with your assessment. 12,800 looks fine to me. 25,600 is starting to loose detail and requires a lot of PP. However, for web sized presentation at moderate or no crop I think it is still okay.

Here is a 51,200 example. This was some seriously low light in the Borneo jungle. Documentary only for sure.

51,200 at 1/40th on monopod

Documentry maybe, but much better than no shot or blurred at 6400

They look great. They have a very film like grain to them but like iso 400 film not 12800. How far we have come.
