Is it worth buying a 100-400 for $250 that will not auto focus and have it repaired? Anyone here have a auto focus repair done that could give me a ballpark cost?

Campy, my 70 200 IS II accidently dismounted and fell off my camera and hit a wood floor so hard it dented the wood. The mount was bent, the lens did not AF properly. Canon replaced the mount and replaced a part that got paint chipped, repaired the focus and the bill after the CPS discount came to $400.00.

Hope this helps.

There are a ton of issues that the lens could have. Its worth maybe $800-$850 in good condition, and the repair cost may run $400, or it may run $1200.

If its clean and, the zoom lock and push pull zoom is smooth as glass, its worth the risk. You can always resell it for what you paid or even more if the repair estimate comes in high.

What are the symptoms? Totally dead AF, does it rack back and forth but not lock, etc?

I had a 70-200 non-IS that wouldn't AF - if I remember correctly, you could hear the AF oscillate back and forth a short distance, but that was it. Cost about $300 for a new USM AF motor.

So you might be able to save $300-$400 compared to a working used lens.

Make a deal with the seller; you send it in to CPS for a quote?
