I have a Canon 40D body with a Tamron 17-50mm/2.8 zoom and want to upgrade to a 6D body.
Would like your thoughts on a zoom lens for the 6D. I use the camera mostly for landscape pictures. I know of the Canon 24-70mm and the 17-40mm but wondering what other brands should be considered to achieve similar or better quality than the Tamron and keep the cost down around $750 or below. I would also like to keep the lens light-weight and am thinking that, with the 6D, I could go with an f4. I will probably buy the lens used. Thanks. Dave

I think you're looking for either the Canon 24-105 L or the new 24-105 STM. Both are available as kits bundled with the 6D. The 24-105 L is also widely available used for under your budget.

I agree with the above poster. I've had a 6D now for a year and a half. The 24-105 is my walk around lens and it takes fine pictures. My kit also includes the 17-40 and the 100-400. Most of my pictures are with the 24-105. For the price it's a fine lens.

I used the 40D 17-50 Tamron combo a lot for holiday trips, worked very well.

Probably the best thing to do is buy the 6D with one of the Canon 'kit' lenses as mentioned, they are all very good.

If you can't afford that you can always get the 17-50's big brother, the really very good Tamron 28-75 f2.8 which, if you get a good copy is terrific.

Sadly you probably won't find the 40D or 17-50 are now worth much

6D is an outstanding camera worthy of topnotch glass. If budget is a concern, the 24-105 L can be had for $500 in fine condition and is a bargain at the price. It is at the lower end of image quality for a Canon L lens, but still a very solid choice and would be my preference for build quality ahead of the 24-105 STM.

You could also look at the new Sigma 24-105 f/4, getting good reviews. I have a Sigma 18-35 and can vouch for the massive increase in quality over older Sigma lenses.

The 24-105L seems like the best bet considering the criteria. The 6D will be a nice upgrade from the 40D for landscape. Enjoy!

the 24-105 is one of the best starter lens for the dollar (especially used).

Another vote for the 24-105. I got the 6D + 24-105 kit and have been using the lens a lot more than I realized.

24-105 STM image quality doesn't look very good at all at TDP.

Another vote for the 24-105 f/4 IS L. Many have been produced, it's a solid lens, well made, good image quality, and there's a ton of them available.

I just purchased the Sigma 24-105mm f/4.0 DG OS HSM Art Lens. Very sharp to edges where Canon 24-105 does not. Slightly higher than your limit of $750 at $899.
