p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 28-300 with D750?

I recently bought my first Nikon (D750) along with Sigma 24-105 F4 and Nikon 50 f1.8G. I like the Sigma but I would prefer a longer reach and I came across Nikon 28-300. There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews for this lens. Some people really like it as a one lens solution while others consider it an abomination due to distortion and lack so sharpness.

I would like to know if this lens is worth purchasing for D750 as a travel solution or is it better if I stick with Sigma 24-105 and later add Nikon 70-300.

I think this lens would pair great with the D750. I bought this lens for my dad but I always grab it when I travel. The autofocus is crappy, but the image quality is quite surprising. I have found it actually to be quite sharp, especially stopped down to F8.

It has a great focal range but don't expect amazing results in low light, moving subjects and @ 300mm wide open.

Hardcore, those are some amazing pictures. I don't think I can take those kind of pictures with an expensive lens let alone a prosumer grade super zoom.

Super zoom lenses generally don't get a lot of respect from some "pro" shooters. However, I have been able to get many great shots with mine. I like it a lot. Since the f-stop changes with the zoom, you don't have as much light for focusing at 300mm. And the bokeh might not be as pleasing as a 300 f4 lens. But it works.

For the money, as a travel solution I'd consider a refurbished D3300 and 18-200mm.

However, I owned the 28-300mm once. I took some pretty nice shots with it on my old D700.

Everything is a compromise, unless you want to walk around with a Nikon 800mm lens and an Otis 55mm. So, if the 28-300mm works for you, try it.

I had the 28-300 for a whale and found it to be a very nice lens, but it's a little on the big and heavy side. You may also want to check out the new Tamron 28-300 VC, it's smaller and lighter then the Nikon. I had the first Tamron version and it was a nice lens ,but slow to AF, the new version is suppose to have better AF.

From what I've read, Tamron is quite soft compared to Nikon. Also at 300mm it goes to f6.3 instead of 5.6 on Nikon.

I would second that - f8 is the sweet spot with this lens. I used one for two years with my D800 and enjoyed it a lot. I already had a 70-300 when I bought the 28-300 and promptly sold it as soon as I found out that at 300mm it was no better than the 28-300.

It is a great lens when you don't want to be caught between lens changes but it is a little hefty. I have sold mine for a variety of reasons but I still consider it a very good and useful all rounder. I bought it used soon after I got the D800 because I had been very happy with the 18-200 on my D7000 but I think Thom Hogan is dead right that the 18-200 isn't really up to par with the 24mp DX cameras.

I always wished it was a 24-260 lens - I love the reach but would have sacrificed some of the long end for 24 v 28 at the short end.

fun to see the mixed reviews for this lens here - what will you use it for?

do you need higher IQ, lower flare, etc. from a more limited zoom range pro lens (200-400)?

OTOH, do you need a 24 much? because this lens doesn't go that wide

do you need fast focus speed?

it is a very nice lens, and the mixed reviews here are similar in origin to the mixed reviews for the 24-100 on that thread

someday Nikon will make a 24-400 pro IQ lens that weighs almost nothing and costs only... [I'll stop there]

I've been using the 28-300 lens with my D700 for a month or so now, and all I can say is WOW!!
For the money, I've never owned a better lens in Canon or Nikon.

Now, if could just find enough spare change to get a 14-24...

The 28-300 VR is an excellent lens, that I used quite a few times for paid assignments. It is an ideal travel lens as well. highly recommended. I also own the Tamron (I bought it before the Nikon was released), a good lens, but the Nikon is way better (AF, sharpness, 5.6 instead of 6.3).

Resurrecting this old thread to compliment for the pictures, they are really nice, some a bit over sharpened but I like them and it is convincing me to keep the 28-300 which I took for a couple rides after letting it sit on a shelf for couple years, it's sharp, I didn't expect it, till a certain focal length it is quite good from f8 up, AF is not bad either (considering my other lenses are all AF-D besides the AF-S 85/1.8 which is not a champ in that dept), the hood is a bit weird but all in all I am starting to appreciate it, it is always coupled with the 85 in the bag and it does very well, probably gonna become a keeper!

A sample with the 28-300 and the old D2Xs
