I see this is an EF-S lens...what does that mean exactly? I did a search and read conflicting answers. My question is...Is this a true 17mm-55mm on a cropped body or do you still multiply by 1.6?

EF-S means that it will only mount on a crop-sensor body, e.g. the 7D. It will not work at all on a full frame body, e.g. the 5D.

It is a 17-55mm lens. If you want to know the equivalent field of view on a FF camera, you multiply by 1.6.

So it works like a 27-88mm lens would on a FF body.

BTW, it is a great lens.

EF-s lenses have a different mount which mounts on all crop sensor cameras only. EF-s lenses can't be mounted on full frame Canon cameras.

The FOVCF applies to either crop camera bodies or full frame bodies. As a result, multiply the focal length of the lens by 1.6 to obtain the equivalent FL on 35 mm film.

EF-s lenses seem to be sharper on crop cameras based on what I see (YMMV). The 17-55mm is a great lens which I will re-purchase.

Good info here. The 17-55 is still the best lens, IMO, for a crop camera. Fast, has IS, and is optically superior to the other lenses in that range.

I just did a short quick comparison of my Canon 1.4 Version1 and the 17-55 both wide open and the 17-55 was clearly sharper by a lot....I also did them both at F/4.5 and they were much closer ( indistinguishable) with no post processing in IQ and shot with jpg..The 17-55 shines wide open

Most slower lenses will appear sharper at smaller apertures than the 50 f/1.4 will wide open. It is not a fair comparison.

The 17-55 is quite good, but the new Sigma 18-35 is even better. Although, since you give up range and IS it's harder to make a direct comparison.

hi! do you have any info whether something like 15-55 f/2.8 IS is coming with a better build quality and flare resistance?

Yeah it's a good lens, I used this lens for quite some time on a rebel and was always satisfied with the colors, sharpness, etc. I know they won't call an EF-S an 'L' for branding reasons but this might as well be one.

I downloaded some raw-s with it. I don't question its advantages, however as I shoot long exposure cityscapes, I need something "better".

the EFs 17-55 is by far the best ALL-ROUND standard zoom for Crop Canon .

Selling mine was by far the biggest (probably only) regret in moving to FF . the 24-105L (which I already had) isn't as good . the newer 24-70/4L maybe close but the EFs is a dam good lens

15-55/2.8 would be a great lens . but I bet it would also be a fair bit bigger and a heck more expensive
