p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New year Business Resolutions

Happy 2015 all.

Now it's here, what are you going to do to step it up a notch in the new year for your business? New gear? Less gear? Re-write the business plan? Marketing?

Me. I've got two things.

1. I need to be better in my back end. Invoicing, filing, paperwork. I know how. I just hate it. So I'm going to bribe myself so that if I'm up to date at the end of the mont I'll give myself a reward of some sort.

2. I'm building a drone. Plus I'm enrolling into a relevant course to be able to legally do commercial arial photography work. I have a Phantom already. This will be something more serious. It may be the only flying lessons I ever take

Yours?

Gordon

1) work less
2) make more
3) don't get burned out like this year
4) get the process more streamlined to ease stress from small tasks
5) take more time off
6) get better at posing...again
7) shoot more boudoir during the week
8) have a small preview album for each couple a few days after the wedding
9) no more than 2 week turnaround on weddings all year long
10) hire an associate photographer
11) finally get our client guides put together
12) obsess less about editing
13) obsess more about shooting with precision
14) obsess even more about helping families have moments
16) pay closer attention to details
17) spend more time practicing
18) have enough down time that I actually want to spend time practicing
19) shoot for free more often
20) learn to let go

Give up the wedding/portrait dream.

Everytime I think about making money at photography... it's a black hole in terms of time and money.

Came to that conclusion in 2009 and tried to jumpstart the dream again in 2014.

Keeping photography a serious hobby, though I hope to provide weekly You Tube content doing gear reviews and personal photo projects/adventures.

Though I'm finding this not very easy either...

I make far more money managing my investments. Time well spent...

1. Read less FM poop.

I set small and large goals throughout the year for my business and personal life. I feel annual resolutions are mostly just a bunch of poop for people to make themselves feel better about their own failings.

Happy shooting all

2014 was a year with a full time day job, the birth of my second son, a kitchen remodel, and 26 weddings. It was too much.

I'm working on finding a solid work life balance, and considering I'll be starting a more challenging and time-consuming day job in about two weeks, I don't know how I'm going to do that.

I just want to find a place where I'm busy enough to stay happy (I like being busy) but not so busy that I have full blown freak outs.

Shoot just enough to keep the rust off. (No plans to go full time)

Force myself to learn via some portrait sessions. (non-clients)

Turn a profit so the IRS does not hunt me down. (AKA, don't let the gear addict purchase too much stuff)

A full-stop on trying to be a wedding planner when I'm a wedding photographer. Nothing causes me more stress than worrying about the timeline.

1) Keep listening to lots and lots of death metal.

Also...simplify common processes.

After a break of 400 days, I decided to accept weddings again, but on my terms.
I won't get a lot, but I'll get the ones I'll love to do.
