p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 100-400 II with 1.4xII?

The 100-400 II is on my short list for acquisitions in the coming year but since I only have ver 1 teles, I only own 1.4xII converters. Has anyone tried a 1.4xII with the new 100-400? I'm wondering if the IQ will be significantly improved with the 1.4x III or whether the 1.4x II will suffice. Just not sure whether it's that critical to shell out the additional $$... Comments appreciated. Thanks.

See this post. I've been asking the same question. I haven't seen a comparison of the v2 vs v3 teleconverter yet and I'm hoping someone will try it. One can use the Digital Pictures's lens compare tool to compare the v2 and v3 converters on the original 100-400 and I can't see any significant difference. Don't know if this applies to the new 100-400 or not.

I'm probably going to upgrade my 100-400 but will wait a while on upgrading the 1.4x until I know more.

There is definitely not a significant improvement in IQ between the 1.4x II and III. There are many reviews comparing the two and that is the general consensus. What there IS is a real difference in autofocus speed and accuracy on version II super-telephoto lenses. The 1.4x III has additional componentry that allows it to accomplish this, however, it does not make any difference to a 70-200 2.8 II and I suspect the same is true for the 100-400 II. If that is the case, then there is really no practical reason to spend more for a version III.

I would think that any new model of Canon lens utilizing their extenders that is introduced after the release of the version III extenders would be designed to utilize the enhanced performance features of the newer extenders.

You might think that, but I do not believe it is accurate. The 70-200 2.8 II and 1.4x III were released only months apart - this is not the relevant fact. The fact is that the super-teles were specifically designed to increase performance with those teleconverters. I continue to maintain my position that it is unlikely (not impossible) that the 100-400 II has the same circuitry as the super-teles that would allow the increase in performance from the version III extenders.

Extenders EF 1.4X III and EF 2X III have been newly developed in conjunction with the new Series II Image Stabilizer EF super-telephoto lenses. They can also be used with all previously announced extender-compatible EF lenses, but maximum performance is achieved when they are used with the new 300mm, 400mm, 500mm and 600mm lenses.

I have an email in to Chuck Westfall asking about this very thing. His automated response says he's on vacation. We'll see if I get a response. Meanwhile, for the 1.4x at any rate, it seems safe to assume that AF speed might be the only difference and that can't be any worse than the old 100-400. I'm going to wait to see if using the v2 1.4x affects my shooting style before spending extra money.

I was shooting today with the 100-400 mark ii w/1.4x v3 and today i was not impressed. The af speed was very good, but the IQ was average at best. Now, the light was horrible today, so i will need to see how it performs if we ever get a sunny day again. Also, i was using my 7D ii and i'm starting to lose faith in this camera body, as i'm starting to think i have a soft copy.
So, not to take this in a different direction, if it's just the AF that you are concerned about using the 1.4 v3, it tracked very well.

Thanks for all the input... Whenever I do get the 100-400 II, I'll plan to use it with my existing 1.4x II TC's when necessary.

Tony, when I saw these on your thread I was thinking the Tamron pics at 600 IMO were somewhat better. After using the Tamron for a while, and now the 100 400 II with the 1.4 III, would you mind sharing which you think gave you the best results in that 560 - 600 range?

+1

would be interesting to see what the REAL WORLD Field of view differences are .

IE same target(s) at various distances like 10m - 30m -100m

and even better if they could be tested against a prime or 2 (500 & 600)

Kathy, I prefer both the handling and IQ of the Canon over the Tamron, even with a 1.4x TC on the Canon.

Most of the recent images from the Canon have been under less-than-ideal lighting.

Thanks Tony, good to hear. I wish someone with that new Sigma Sport would compare those two at the long end now.

I had emailed Chuck Westfall regarding any advantage of using the 1.4x III over the 1.4x II with the 100-400 II. Here is his reply:

Happy New Year!

As of now, I have not had the time to compare the image quality of the new 100-400 version II with 1.4X III vs. 1.4X II. However, our information from Canon Inc. in Japan does not indicate any special optical advantage for either version of the EF Extenders when used with EF zoom lenses. In fact, the only instance in which the Type III Extenders are stated to be a better optical match than earlier models occurs when the Type III Extenders are used with the IS II prime lenses from 300mm to 600mm. Based on that, plus my personal experience with the EF 1.4X II and III on other EF zoom lenses such as the 70-200/2.8L IS II, I wouldn't expect any significant difference in image quality for either of those extenders when used with the new EF 100-400mm IS II lens.

If you hear anything different, please let me know.

Best Regards,
Chuck Westfall

This is good news for us owners of the 1.4x II converter.

The 1.4x III has less CA on the older long teles, that's for sure. Maybe it does not matter for some zoom lenses.
