any thoughts on this one?

http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Digital-31MU97-B-31-0-Inch/dp/B00OKSEVTY

Here is a review (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824025007):

Pros: (a) Color reproduction is one of the most accurate I've seen on 4k
(b) Thin bezels!
(c) Extra wide panel is nice to have for editing
(d) Solid metal stand that isn't bulky
(e) A good response time and minimal ghosting for a 4k IPS panel
(f) Good contrast
(g) Perfect white levels

Cons: (a) Some slight color shifting left to right
(b) There is some back light bleed. But unless you are looking at a black screen in the pitch dark, you won't notice it.
(c) Stand has no swivel
(d) A single button for using the monitor settings, does not work well
(e) Can only modify Kelvin in intervals of 500K... should be able to have much more granularity
(f) Included color correction software is bugged and unusable
(g) Very poor black levels, but this is common for IPS

Other Thoughts: I've been waiting for a good 4k monitor for years. Only now have we finally come into line with the combination of this monitor and recent updates to Windows 8.1. The LG 31MU97 is a solid monitor. But far from perfect. A little bit about my background: I work as a professional designer and programmer, and the CEO of a software development company. I spend most of my time designing UIs in the sRGB color spectrum, programming, or editing photography in Adobe RGB. I also spend a good amount of time on After Effects doing motion graphics. I do put these monitors through their paces up to 20 hours a day, and I like my screens to be flawless. I have used the Samsung UD970, the Dell 24" 4k, 32" 4k, and their 27" 5k. The iMac retina, non retina, and thunderbolt displays. All of the professional offerings from NEC and Eizo. PA328Q, Pro Arts, PBs, Acer's 4k, the TN based 4k panels. I've really used just about every 4k panel there is, and a huge amount of the great 1440p panels out there for professional use.

I'm the kind of person that will run a color callibration suite on 3 different calibrators 6 times each. I'm that OCD about my monitors

This one beats them all, but it's far from perfect. In my opinion, it's the best 4k monitor you can buy right now. I hope that changes, and some day we can enter monitor nirvana with the perfect monitor that does everything we want perfectly. But until that day, this will be my monitor of choice. The most dissapointing part of this monitor is the slight color shifting on the left and right sides. It starts to get a little bit red. It can get frustrating at times. But until there is something better (all 4k monitors color shift a ton and this probably has the least of all, it's just very persistent) this is the one I will use for work that isn't super critical (I'll be sticking with my NEC PA272W for anything that needs to be exactly perfect, although I do love the 4k, until they get a little more accurate we will still need our good ol 1440p)

The Dell 24" display has a 185DPI resolution better then that 31" display's 142DPI resolution still lower resolution then the 2001 IBM 4k display theas was 22.2" with a 204DPI resolution. 31" is larger then I want on my desktop something like 21" would be best IMO.

Still searching for a 4K monitor for my 2013 Mac Pro. Unfortunately, they all seem to have issues right now.

Rdcny, in what way would you say the LG better than the Samsung? The ud970 looks to be better for hardware calibration. I'm looking for a 4k to pair with my new Mac Pro. Thanks.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1012426/ibm-t221-world-finest-monitor

Apple 5k 27" IPS display has a 218DPI resolution 5120px by 2880px 14.7Mpixels Dell has a 27" 5k Also... Roomer Dell will reduce peice to $2K. However not many Cards can handle 5120x2880 pixels.. The Dell can use two Displayport 1.2 cables so you may be able to drive the dell 5k display. With the Apple display you will need to wait till Display Port 1.3 is finalized.

Beautiful monitor. I definitely prefer 4K on the 30+ inch displays. Really expensive at $3200 though and I have a feeling that 4K monitors will ramp down in cost fairly quickly so I'm waiting.

I'm sticking with my NEC 27" for now ... but, will upgrade to 4k when I see something that will work for me and make sense in the long run.

FYI - LG just announced this new 34" ... just an interesting concept:

For those still searching for perfect 4k - I'm seriously considering to buy the Dell P2715Q, released less than a month ago:
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=210-ADOF

It's 27", 60Hz and finally a 4k that has an IPS panel... For only $699. Unfortunately no reviews around yet..

The P2175Q is 99% sRGB, so it's not as wide gamut as the UP3214Q or UP2414Q with their 99% AdobeRGB panels.

27" at UHD is also going to be a little dense at native resolution. It's kind of an awkward size/resolution combo.

I have a UP3214Q and I've had pretty good luck with it. It's a gorgeous panel. 31.5" is a lot more usable at native resolution. The only "issues" I've had with it are pretty rare and minor and easily remedied by power cycling the monitor.

On the LG, be aware it's DCI 4K (4096x2160) on a 31" panel, so it's going to be denser than the Dell at UHD (3840x2160) on 31.5". The Dell is about as small as I'd want elements on-screen.

Also, because of the limits of Mac OS X and Tb2/DP1.2 the LG is limited to 50Hz refresh at 4096x2160.

It is a great price point for 4K and looks great. The problem is the viewable vertical space is only like about 1/2" more then my 24" monitor now and I really want more space vertically. I've contemplated getting two so I can have one in portrait mode but it's just going to crowd my desktop and make it a mess.

Give me a smaller high resolution with near print quality resolution please

There are many larger 4k displays with lower resolution.

The only 4K display I know of the that has high resolution is the old IBM 22.2" 204dpi Display. The problem is the thers no display adapters that can drive it the seme is true for the 5k displays. Typical display adapters the can drive a 4k display can only drive 16>9 aspect ratio one not one like the IBM 16:10 or 8:5 aspect ratio

16:9 4k = 3840x2160
16:10 4k = 3840x2400

My Nvidia Quadro card is a few years old it max is 16:10 aspect ratio 2560x1600 Displays

Even the new Nividia adapters Quadro and Gforce top out at 3840x2160 can not drive the high resolution IBM 4K or the 5k high resolution displays

The only High resolution 2560x1600 displays are on Laptops and Tablets Perhaps some USB3 App for a tablet can be used to hook a tablet up as a display fo a PC.

UHD does make viewable space feel a bit larger though. UHD on 24" 16:9 makes portrait pics feel larger to me than on HD 24" 16:10 screens. I mean it doesn't tower over you quite as much, but all the extra detail still makes it feel larger in a certain sense.

A pretty nice start. It does lack the internal LUT, uniformity compensation, probably uses PWM instead of expensive direct current backlight as in the UP2414Q and also lacks wide gamut. Still, it sounds pretty awesome compared to almost all of the other non-'pro'-type monitors out there.

Just bought the LG 31MU97-B and started using it last Monday.
First of all - it's flat out beautiful. I only have Dell Ultrasharp IPS panels and the LG 31MU97-B is just a different looking beast. I would say it's other worldly great. Viewing Nikon D800E raw files at 100% is so good (in Bridge) that I may need to reconsider my post processing technique.

The extra wide 4K explains the brilliant detail. I am able to use brighter settings (view only, not for printing) and get a gallery type image. Trying to profile it with my i1Display Pro has been a problem. The single button OSD is a weak option - not to even discuss understanding the menu options. The good news is that setting it on Adobe RGB is working for now.

The OP did a great job in his detailed description and I see the same. Hope I get the profiling figure out, but for now, just really enjoying this viewing experience.

I can do essentially a full auto calibration on my NEC monitor using NEC Spectraview II software with either my i1 Pro or i1 Display Pro. Can the LG 31MU97-B do anything similar?

I just snagged one of these (31MU97) last night to compare with my (still within return period) Dell UP3214Q and the display itself is gorgeous, but I think it's going back.

There seem to be some weird bugs with the Mac OS X implementation of SST at high resolutions.

If I hot plug the monitor into my machine, I get 4096x2160 @ 50Hz.

If I then reboot, the FileVault unlock screen is retinized full-screen. Unlock that and it boots to the desktop at 3840x2160 @ 30Hz.

Go into system prefs and option click "Scaled" and there's no option for 4096x2160.

Unplug/plug the MDP cable from the Mac and now I'll get 4096x2160 @ 50Hz as an option.

This behavior remains through two cable swaps (three different cables, including the one that came with it).

I also occasionally get "glitches" that range from little flashes of bars of static to a full screen "blink".

I'm pretty sure Apple's SST implementation is to blame here... because it's acting like a software issue.

This is on a 2014 15" rMBP with the discrete graphics chip. Mac OS X 10.10.1. Lid closed.

Have you tried switchres? http://www.madrau.com

I go back and forth on getting this monitor. I go back and forth between this one and the dell 27".

SwitchResX didn't make any difference. I'm 99% sure it's an issue with Apple's drivers.
