Just looking for suggestion to show large pics for a hobbyist. No pro level site features needed. Want something that will stick around. Hope this is the proper forum for an opinion on this. Don't want to use Facebook, flickr, or instagram. thanks

my vote is Smugmug .

I used to have a Smug account but thought I would drop it for one of the 'free' options (flickr) realised that didn't do what I wanted as easy so after a lot of looking around at various options I went back to smug with a basic account .

Another vote for smugmug here, I've tried other sites over the years and I found I like theirs the best and the price to me is decent for what you get.

If you decide to use smugmug let me know and I can send you a 20% referral code to help save you a few more dollars.

As a web developer I like hosted servers like bluehost.com.
You can easily use a hosted site for photo display using wordpress or use gallery software like coppermine or zenphoto. you can have more than one.

You get the added advantage of private email addresses for you and your family. [email protected].

with simple installations you can:
have a public domain with private sub-domains
point other domains to your sub-domains.
set up an ecommerce site with zencart
create your own forums
create your own wiki site

For web forums like FM i put stuff on flickr and link to it, for friends and family i have a Zenfolio account. Smugmug would also be a good option.

Planning on using SmugMug as well. I wish they allowed soundtracks like Zenfolio though.

Curious why you don't like Flickr?

Happy with Smugmug but I wish I could upload small video clips too. Zenfolio, 500px and others all similar.

I evaluated these services a while ago.

I love 500px due to social aspect - feedback. It is also free (although they have paid options). I like design of the interface.

Flickr works best for my family photos and does a great job when downscaling photos for sharing (like posting images on forums).

Smugmug is the best choice for portfolio sharing for professional.

I use 500px and Flickr now, but I'll have a look at Smugmug again to see what has changed since I was last time there. I quite liked it when I was evaluating, but I decided to stay on 500px due to the social aspect.

Shutterfly, since i am a former Kodak gallery user. Easy interface since you can create a semi custom site and invite only those you want to it. I use it for my kids sport teams photos.

The photo sharing sites are all roughly the same, Kodak had the best picture quality. All allow posting to social media which kids love.

All have pros and cons, but it really depends as a hobbyist on why you want to share your photos online and what you want to get out of it. I think blogs/tumblr and certain web sharing sites such as flickr/500px are great options.
