p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Switch to Nikon-Body and Lens Pkg advice please!

Merry Christmas everyone.
I'm switching to Nikon from Canon. Had a 1d3, canon 50 1.8, Sigma 15 2.8 ex fishy, and a Sigma 70-200 2.8 ex.

I want to go full frame and I want to print BIG.

As I, ahem, "mature", my photographic interests have switched from high action shooting to street, city, landscape and wildlife photography. I am not a pro, just a real enthusiast.

My budget is $4000, give or take. I'm looking at either the D750 or the D810.

With the boxing week sales in full swing, I'm looking at these combo options.

D750 + nikkor 24-120 f4 + nikkor 70-200f4
D750 + Sigma 24-105 f4 art, Tamron 70-200 f2.8

D810 + 1 of the above lenses
D810 + Tamron 150-600

Those are the basic combos I've managed to narrow it down to.
What would you do? Any advice is very appreciated.

thanks

That'd be tough to beat for the money

well, based on "I want to print BIG. " and the fact you used upper case to emphasize the word big..D810 is the one for you..I'd get a new 20 1.8 G and 50 1.8 G for starters so there's your $4k....that'd cover your street, city, landscape but not wildlife....think it'd be pretty difficult to cover everything you like with $4K if we're talking new...camera equipment is allot like owning a Harley..every time I say "that's it, I'm done, I don't need anything else"..well, it don't work

For wildlife the D810 + Tamron 150-600 would be hard to beat, but leaves a lot open at the short side.
50/1.8G is excellent and cheap.

I'm with Kell, it's very difficult to get everything for 4K.
Perhaps a thad below; get a second hand D800

As soon as I wrote that down, I thought, 'man, that would be sweet'

You can very easily get the D810 + 1 lens for $4K.

I see you are in Canada. D810's are $2950 right now, a no-brainer at that price.

http://www.adencamera.com/product-overviewer.asp?ProdID=4950&Category=1

You could then easily add a Sigma 24-105/4 for $929 and you're at $3879. You could also add a 50/1.8 G on top of that for $199. Total = $4078.

The 70-200/4 is $1199 right now, so you would be slightly over budget, but very close. Total = $4149

You can do the math on the rest of your combos, but that's what I'd do.

Some very cheap memory cards here too right now:

What is it you don't like about your current setup? For street, a smaller body is an advantage as well as live view with swivel LCD is an advantage. For wildlife your existing body will do well with a longer lens. Why not get a low end smaller Canon body for street and a longer lens?

Indeed. I have no delusions that this will be the final collection. I'm not trying to get everything in one shot, but I am trying to get off to a good start with Nikon.

You're right, I am leaning towards the 810. It felt so much better in my hands than the 750. The deeply indented grip of the 750 may be good for some but to me my fingers felt constricted and cramped holding the camera. Of course I am used to the pro Canon body so I know whatever I choose will take some getting used to. Not to mention the buttons and controls which are from another planet ha!

Yeah, I roll with the D810. That Sigma 24-105 is stunning but I've got the NIKON 70-200 f2.8 VR II
...and that'd bust your budget. No substitute for 'horsepower' re: 36.3 MP. If you need samples with any of
my glass (profile) just give a yell. We're MORE than happy to spend your money over here on the darkside.

Yes, the time is definitely right to make the $ commitment.

The 70-200 has always been my most used lens..not even close really. I'm worried that I'd miss the 2.8 though.

None of the current canon offerings excite me, nor do their sensors and frankly i'm tired of waiting around for them to up their game. It's time for a change.

I agree, the swivel lcd , while sounding gimmicky at first, I can really see the potential of it.

I have gone through yours and others spectacular shots in the official 810 thread, and while most of those incredible results are due to the guy behind the lens, it is obvious to see the 810s' remarkable potential.

For your budget, you'd be able to get some amazing glass if you stepped "down" to a D610. While the af is not as fast as the D750, the sensor is virtually the same. This would leave you $2500 to invest in some great glass... I, however, am a glass guy first, as the bodies lose their value and luster so very fast these days.

Regardless, you'll enjoy the broad Full-Frame options available to Nikon shooters.

Good luck with your decision. As a user of all the Nikon (no Sigma or Tamron here) gear you listed in your original post, I'd absolutely do the D810 body and likely 24-120 lens. Do reply what you purchase.

Street, City, Landscape and Wildlife just call for a D610 and some first class glass.

With the D610, the already mentioned Nikon or Sigma 24-105 f4, a 50 f1,8 and something in the tele range (you might even look at a used Sigma 120-300 f2,8 if you want to carry that heavy a lens)

as per above "BIG" means a D810

I also hear that neither lens posted is super high quality - you may want the newer primes, or the 24-70

Ditto.

To stay within $4000 budget, I would choose the following:
D600 + 24-120VR f4 + 70-200VRII

I recently swapped from a 5D MKIII to a D810 and couldn't be happier. Picked up my brothers 50D yesterday and it just reinforced my decision.

I'd go with a D810 and a few of the new G primes.

Reading FM threads over the years (and spending tens of thousands on lenses), I've learned that a photographer's lens line-up is always a work in progress. So, buy the camera of your choice (sounding like the 810) and one lens that best meets your current needs. Learn the camera and build your lens kit over time.

The first G lens I bought was the 24-70 and it is still a workhorse. I can resell it tomorrow without taking a big hit. Not sure I could do that with most 3rd party lenses.

Agree on what James R wrote.
I bought a Nikon 14-24 f2,8 for $1500' ish in 2008 and sold it for almost the same amount in 2014
Couldn't do the same with a Sigma lens.
