I'm very close to purchasing a 400 DO and I like a to buy a new tripod/head combo since what I have now creeps with my 100-400 now .

I'm trying to keep it around $600-700 , any suggestion is appreciated .

It will be use with a 1D4 / 400DO and a 1.4x II Extender

Thanks .... Ralph

Didn't think about that but I'm thinking Carbon fiber but if traditional does the job is ok with me .

I rolled the dice a few years ago on a HorusBennu Carbon Fiber Tripod and I have not been disappointed. They have become a little more known since then. I have four 1 series cameras and all sorts of lenses, holds them all just fine. If my wife ever needs one in the future, I will be purchasing a second one for sure.

That is a light and smallish setup which should not require a monster type of a support.
This is the kind of lighter duty tripod/gimbal I am also looking to get myself, and the price is within your budget:

Feisol CT-3301 carbon fiber legs ($279) + Jobu Jr.3 gimbal head ($329) = $608.

Both items are carried by B&H.

I just got a Vanguard Auctus Pro for Christmas this morning, it's the CT283. Combined with the Vanguard SBH-300 it seems to be a real nice sturdy combo with a 6d and a Tamron 150-600. For a heavier combo you could get the CT384 which is a little beefier. So far I'm thrilled and I know what my wife paid for it, very affordable item from Amazon.

I have the Jobu Jr. 3 gimbal that Peter recommended and find it very reliable. This is paired with a Manfrotto CF 055 CXS tripod and it's been a reliable pairing…

I'm finally getting around ordering a Jobu head but I had a couple of question

I bought a 300 2.8 instead of a 400DO / Will the Jobu Jr still work ok or should I get the Pro instead , Looks like the Jr should work / I will be using it with a 1Dv and a TC.

I wasn't able to find a replacement foot for the 300 V1 / I was going to get a 4" qr plate but wouldn't mind getting a foot for it .

Thanks

The foot doesn't come off.

Check out 4th Generation Designs for their version of a plate.

The V1 foot does come off, the V2 does not.

Jobu Jr will be fine with the 300 f2.8. It'll support the 500 f4 (Mark I) quite comfortably, though it's not recommended for that use. The Pro/HD versions are overkill for the 300 even with a pro body and extender.
