p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 100-400 vs 200-400 IQ?

How close would one expect the IQ to be between the 100-400 II and 200-400 at f/8?
Thanks

Here's a good test of that...

Looking at the comparison charts on TDP, the two lenses look very close to identical to my eyes at 200, 300 and 400. The difference, is at 560 with the internal TC engaged on the 200-400. The advantage here goes to the 200-400. YMMV

yes plus 100-400 lighter, cheaper but

200-400 = f4 and built in 1.4x

I think my mileage varies by several thousand dollars
I think the 100-400 will be a go good with my 500 and 800.

No question the 200-400 with the 1.4x built in and f4 gives this lens a serious leg up but at a 10k premium.

have you thought about moving the 500 and the 800 and getting the 600 ii?

600 ii + 100-400 II in theory would be a great combo.

I don't want to steal this thread, but this is what I have been thinking about too….

I can save almost 3 kg in weight by getting the 100-400L II + 600L II + 2X Extender and selling my 70-300L +500L II + 800L…..
What's holding me back is:
Losing 1 lens (going from 3 to 2) will this make me less flexible
The 600L II is less hand-holdable than the 500 L II (heavier/bigger)..
The 800L I really DO LOVE…. (it is my most used lens)

OTOH there is a lot to say for the lighter/simpler set….

Choices, choices….

Merry X'mass everybody!!!

Koen.

+1

I own the 800 and 500 also, while I have nothing against the 600, it IS amongst the best, but when you have the 500 and 800 the 600 becomes irrelevant.

I believe 800L is still the King Kong of the Canon long lenses.
Anything else requires a TC to come close to its reach.

Granted, there are several ways to skin the cat, just that I do not think it makes much sense to be selling 800L in order to get 600 II. Ok, you might gain 0.5 kg weight-wise, and it is nice to have an f/4 lens for shorter distance to targets, if that is what your needs are. However, such 800L to 600 II swap will coast you a significant amount of money, and you will not make any IQ nor AF responsiveness gains. 600 II is one mightily sharp lens, but when it comes to an overall IQ appeal, I prefer 800L.

Again, this can be done in several ways, but if you already own 800L, then I believe it is better to look at lenses which would complement it for shorter FLs. For example, 500 II is a wonderful partner to 800L, and so is 200-400L, and probably 400 DO MkII as well.

The "problem" we the Canon shooters have is that there are several superb long lens options and combinations available today, and whichever one you chose, you are really not going to end up short changed by much, if at all.

i was going to go that route (500 ii & 800) when i had the 800 and swore that i would never sell it, but in my mind, it's like why?

the 600 is more versatile at focal lengths(600mm, 840mm, 1200mm), closer focusing distance and then some less weight (basically same weigh as the 500mm IS).

when i had the 500 ii, i almost always had a teleconverter on it. so i am going to carry around two big whites, it will be what offers the best versatility, which would be the 200-400 + 600.

I do have the 100-400 ii now, which i got a screaming price on (i did not get it from the military discount site, so now when traveling it is going to be a question is the 200-400 worth lugging around vs the 100-400 ii?

it's a good question, just like every which lens(es) should i take or own, that each of us has to figure out what suits us best.

the 200-400 pretty much eliminated the need for several lenses including the 500mm.

Petkal is right, Canon has presented us with a big "problem" as there are many options.

I just try to do what is best for me at the lightest weight possible.

on a side note, if someone could build a teleconverter that say had 2 - 1.4x's built into that you could flip on and off independently, i think that would be something i would be willing to spend a considerable amount of money on.

It's great we now have plenty of options but they haven't made it easy. No combo will be a mistake IMO and I'm sure most would be happy with a number of different combos. I agonised over the 500 II and 600 II, but after experiencing the 500 II I'm now glad I went that route it's so much lighter than the mk I. I can live with using a TC when needed and as cameras pixel densities get higher the 500 makes more and more sense to me. As much as I'd love the 200-400 it'll be 100-400 II all the way for me. M ultimate system would be 100-400L II, 500L II and 800L II. I'm guessing 800L II will be same weight as 600 II and have mfd reduced by about 1m. Better still if they make an 800 f/5.6 DO coming in at about 500 II weight.

I have had the 200-400 for a while and got the 100-400 a week ago. Still learning to use it to full advantage. However, based on my shots so far the 200-400 will win out in ultimate image quality (as it should granted the price difference) and subject isolation. But - for hiking the 100-400ii has a killer weight advantage and more than good image quality.

If you are buying a 200-400 to use at f/8 then you are spending way too much money on your equipment.

The 200-400 is better wide open and it gives you up to an extra stop of light.

This is the same route i'm going, but i think i'll hold onto my 800L! I too think it will be best complimented with the 2-4 and then the light travel rig - 100-400II. The 2-4 replaces the 500II without a doubt! The extra stop at 560 is a non issue for me and why shoot at 700 5.6 when i could shoot at 800 5.6? Or 1000 f8 vs 1120 f8? Not saying there is anything wrong with the 500II its just a matter of what works best for the photographer and this setup works best for me.
