p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Test driving the new 100-400 with the 1.4xTC

Late this afternoon the light was great so I headed down to the harbour to test drive the new 100-400 v.2 with the 1.4xTC III. These were mounted on my 5D III on which the ISO was set to 800 and the aperture to f/8 which is wide open with this combo. Shutter speed was adjusted as the sun dropped lower over the hour I was there. All shooting was done hand held at 560mm.

Given that the 100-400 is not one of the super telephoto primes, I made sure my expectations were reasonable. As it turns out, the performance equaled or surpassed my expectations. It looks like the 100-400 and 1.4xTC will play very nicely together.

If I do my part and get the focus point on the in-flight target, the combo locks on without hesitation. And it's accurate. With my past experience to draw on, I have to say with the TC, it's faster than my previous version or my 400/5.6 was with the TC. Keep in mind that at f/8 you only have the center AF point to work with.

Enough chatter. Here are some images of birds in flight, on the water and on land......

Good shooting, Harvey. Looks like the AF with a TC will be as good or better than the Tamron 150-600.

Your experience is consistent with mine, Harvey. Today was my first chance at testing out the new 100-400 mark II with 1.4x TC on a 1DX, handheld. I was amazed at how well the AF worked (with IS set at mode3) on subjects that were really tiny in the viewfinder. The lens is a keeper. Now I need to sell the 6 month old Mark I version that I bought to replace a Mark I lens that I had had for more than 10 years. (much of that time spent waiting for the new version.) Thanks, Santa.

Glad to hear your of your experience as well. Looks like Canon hit another home run with this one. I guess my 400 will likely go on the block in the not too distant future.

These are very good Harvey....well done!!

I struck out yesterday locating my Canada Geese flock. But I did get a chance to test out MFD on the 100-400 II. I'll post some results later today. I agree, that this lens is a keeper.

All the EXIF data is attached. I didn't realize it had to be enabled on every post. Now it is.

First test shots. MFD is very nice with this lens. Lr defaults only.

Very nice, Morley. I'm finding that this lens is so contrasty that on some images I am actually pulling it back even though I'm shooting in neutral picture style.

I used it today on a variety of birds and was delighted on how well it performed. Handheld shots at shutter speeds much lower than I would have attempted in the past and all were sharp.

I'll try to get one more post up tomorrow with shots from today.

Thx Harvey.

These were all done handheld which can be challenging for me. I also have backed off on the contrast with this lens and only default Lr adjustments.

I'm really liking this lens.

any 100% crops? it's impossible to judge things other than for flare, large scale contrast and some purple fringing otherwise
