Did you ever wonder what your dishes do in there while they're waiting to be washed?

Best looking and cleanest dishwasher I've ever seen, Ken. Almost looks like mood lights going on in there. Great colors! Mike

The glasses waiting around in my dishwasher are planning where to put their water spots.

Your dishwasher looks like a discotheque, though. Maybe all your glasses just think swingin' thoughts

Great idea for the WA!

Love it !!!
But, is your dishwasher really that color ??
Mine's a boring white !
My dad used to say" How did the cameraman get into the cave before the cowboy" (referring to movies and shows). So how did you crawl into the tiny space?

Thank you all for your wonderful remarks! As a relative "newbie" here, they mean alot to me.

Of course my dishwasher looks like this...doesn't yours?! ;-)

This was actually quite a set-up to shoot. Since my other avocation is videography/filmmaking I've accumulated a small arsenal of lighting instruments over the years. So I decided to use some for this shot. My goal was to get a festive, night-life coloration reminiscent of what you might find in Miami's South Beach area at night. I also wanted to use the sprayer's shape as a bit of a metaphor for the hurricane symbol used on meteorological maps. (I certainly didn't want to poke jest at the Floridians' currently poor fortunes.)

Of course I first removed the lower rack and sprayer from the dishwasher. I used gaffer's tape to fix two 12v Kino Flo singles (fluorescent lights) to the top of the cabinet, one in each corner. I (mostly) hid them from view by using the opaque coffee cups on each side of the top rack. I wrapped these lamps with CTB (blue) gels. By loading the center of the rack with glasses I was able to catch and bounce a bit of a blue glow from the Kinos.

Next I used a Lowel Omni light (tungsten) with a 350w lamp to light the underside and cabinet. I used a magenta gel on the Omni to get the wild coloration you see.

I used my 1DMarkII camera with a 17-40mm lens to actually take the shot. I simply laid the camera on the base of the dishwaher cabinet, propping and tilting it as needed. Not being a young man with a limber back any longer I connected the camera to my Powerbook via Firewire and used the Canon software to control the exposures and to fire the camera from the countertop. This saved a great deal of bending, checking, chimping and, later, Ben Gay time. The images came straight to the computer.

My wife, returning home to find my head in the dishwasher cabinet, reminded me that suicide by drowning in a dishwasher was highly unlikely.

Glad you liked it! It was great fun to do.
