p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Night over the Gallatin River

These are a couple of my first attempts at night photography. I have this photo processed 2 ways. Each gives a very different take on the same scene. I would love to get some input on both. I am just learning how to capture and process these.

It was taken with a Canon 5DIII, 14mm lens at 2.8, ISO 3200 and 30 seconds. I got minor star trails and would shorten the exposure next time.

Any critique or advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

I like the darker sky of the first best. I have tried these with my 5D3 but the noise was a killer. How did you process out all the noise? I used long noise.

I think the star trails are acceptable, 30 seconds ought to be fine for 14mm.

Nothing major for removing noise. Processed in LR first with some luminance NR and masking followed by 100% color NR.

The trails are minor. More noticeable in the corners, but I suppose that just may be from distortion. I am not really used to what this lens produces as I have only used it a couple times.

They both work. Which do you like more? I would lean towards the first one I think.

As for the star movement, a little bit of movement is fine. With shooting at 14mm, you will never be able to get rid of all star movement. A little is fine, and 30 secs is usually the max before the star movement becomes a distraction. I would aim for 25 secs, but I shoot lots of stars at 30 secs because it's just so dark, I really can't shoot any less without having to crank up the ISO to a point where the shot becomes too noisy then.

Thanks Jim. I prefer the first one myself. It makes the bridge less of a focus due to the beams not standing out against the sky as much, which I am not sure I like. But overall it works better for me. I thought it may look over processed.

I just flat out like the 1st.. Nothing wrong with the second. It sure takes me there. Good creative and great post processing. Hand it and then go on.

I like them both, kinda depends on my mood.
Your foreground is pretty sharp, did you take two shots for a composite?

Per Ben
Noise isn't that bad on the 5D3 if you expose the sky properly. A little selective noise reduction using a luminance mask will help preserve the stars.

I agree with the mood comment. They convey very different moods.

This was just one shot at f2.8 focused at infinity. I was surprised how sharp the foreground came out. I took some other shots guessing at foreground focus because I could not see anything through the viewfinder, but they were all trash. It ended up working with just the one exposure.

Glad you like them.

Great shot, I personally like the first one better. Both are great edits though.

Another vote for the first, which is a cracker of a shot IMHO. Well done!

Very nice for a first attempt; congratulations. The first one looks better to me, more impressive in a way.

Thanks for the comments. It sounds like most like the first one better. Me too.
