I spent the summer working on a wildlife refuge in Indiana (fyi, there's not many refuges in that area). Ground nesting bird species are my favorite, and Kentucky Warblers are no exception. They are a beautiful warbler but can be difficult to see. They are a mature forest specialist - and mature forest means NO light.
This little lady built a huge nest cup of dead leaves around the inner cup of grass and rootlets (see 3rd pic). I wish I had some pics of her perched as well but like I said, very skittish.

I haven't found a slow moving warbler yet. The nest is a great find.

Great find. Did you set up a blind?
I think that nest was so well hidden it would have been tough to get good shots of the adults feeding the young!. Hope you get more chances.

Yes, that's true and this is an open nest for a kentucky. The other kentucky nests I found were so concealed there was no way to even take a shot. And no, no time for a blind. I was doing bird surveys 6 days a week and I was only able to go to the area occasionally when I was working. I also had to haul my camera along with a lot of heavy work equipment if I wanted to sneak in any shots so unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to spend much time shooting. That wouldve been fun to do while they were feeding nestlings though!

lol I know Tim, I agree it makes no sense but thats where the job was! I do pride myself on getting shots of things people don't see often.

Hope things are going well for you too! I miss WA - hopefully someday I'll make it back.
