p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · MP-E 65 lens contacts getting old... replace or fix?

I've had my MP-E 65 for about 4.5 years, and I've used it an awful lot. I've probably taken it out into the field at least 200 times since I bought it. Lately, I have been getting this error quite a lot:

"Er 01. Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts."

I was using it yesterday, and it seemed as though it only became an issue when shooting above 1X but less than 2X. Outside that range, it was working fine. Today it is worse and is showing the error across the whole range.

I could send it in for a check and cleaning, but I'm guessing there is a pretty high chance that they'll just charge me over USD100 and tell me it can't be fixed. I had some cameras cleaned at the local Canon facility here and they didn't do a very good job in my opinion.

I've googled this error and didn't come up with much.

Anyone out there have a similar issue, and should I just go out and buy a new one?

Thanks, Terrence

Try using a pencil eraser to clean the contacts on the lens.

You can try the same on the contacts on the camera body but, you have to be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body.

The other alternative is to use some very fine sand paper - red in color - to clean the contacts.

You've got nothing to lose providing you are careful.

Thanks. I tried the eraser on the lens but no improvement. Will investigate the sand paper angle tomorrow.

Unlikely, but another cause of poor contact can be grease e.g. from skin contact. Some water with a small amount of detergent in it, on a tissue, should shift that. Make sure you wipe it dry.

Think you will find this is likely an internal problem with ribbon cable contacts - hence the variation with magnification- common problem with the MPE-65. Unfortunately need to be sent in for repair.

Thanks Harold, Brian. Will get a quote from Canon, but assume it will be outrageous...

Facing the same problem too, but mine is a little different.

1X and slightly more than 1X, probably till 1.2x - okay.

Beyond 1.2x - ERR01.

Just before 2X, okay, all the way up to 5X.

Canon says the cable might be worn out. Will cost about RM300 for repair. That's close to US$100.

Thanks Kurt. Mine acting up today. Wouldn't work at all then was ok after mounted to tripod.

USD100 on a USD1000 lens isn't a great scenario-- and that's assuming the service guys actually fix it and don't mess something else up.

Fighting back the urge to buy another one... 😀

I know what you mean. I sent my MT24EX in last time and when I got it back because one side wouldn't fire. When I got it back, both sides could fire, at FULL POWER only! Had to send it back!
