I have been using a 40D for some time with better lenses (L) and getting some great shots over the years. I'm wondering if I try a Canon EOS Rebel T5 body with my good lenses what I loose in quality etc? I know I gain video which is something that I'm after, but will I be disappointed with the rest?
Am I going to be happy with sports (still) shots in comparison to the 40?

Thoughts? Thanks!

NOTE: I apologize for missing that the OP referred to the T5 — I assumed T5i, and my comments are based on that more expensive model. I'll leave the rest of the post here — but with that qualifier.

- - - - -

The image quality will potentially be better than what you are getting with our 40D, since sensor and other technologies have improved. You'll have to decide whether the different form factor, etc. is right for you.

(Back later to be more specific about some factors that might matter to you...)

18 MP (versus 10 MP)
self-cleaning dust reduction system (not on 40D)
same number of AF points
updated AF performance on newer camera
larger ISO range
lower max fastest shutter speed ( 1/4000, 1/8000 on 40D)
Both have live view, but improvements in the t5i version
video recording
5 fps (40D can do 6.5)
deeper burst mode buffer on 40D

I'd say you'll like the t5i (note that the OP referred to the less expensive T5! — see my note above) if IQ and features like video and dust reduction are important to you. If you need the slightly faster burst mode of your 40D, you might prefer something that isn't a t[x]i model. Some prefer the smaller size of the Rebel style bodies. Some don't.

Trade-offs, no?

Why not try a 70d? Little different layout from the 40d, but great IQ, outstanding video and you keep the higher FPS for sports (although I am not sure what the T5 FPS are).

You should see improvement with the newer technology. Good luck. Jim

Perhaps you could look for a used 70D if cost is an issue. A lower body than that will mostly be undesirable for action.

I still have a 40D, I just don't really want to sell it even though it never gets used.

I'd say there are three main improvements: video (if you are interested in that sort of thing), the increased size of the files, which allows more cropping and/or bigger enlargements and much better high ISO performance, which for sport and many subjects is very useful.

But as the others said you may want to get a xxD body rather than a Rebel. A 60D or 70D would be my choice

Imo, beside the video you won't gain much in IQ, AF and FPS compared to your spending. Install ML if you want to video with 40D.

Cool, guys. Appreciate the feedback tremendously. I've never been a rebel fan but I know these thing constantly evolve and wanted some expert opinions. I could always grab a decent 60D body for the video. I just thought it would be nice shooting some vids with my lenses rather than get a "camcorder" and rely on the fixed lens set up.

Thanks for being so helpful!

There are some really good deals on used 7D cameras (around $500) now that the newer 7DII version is out. Particularly for action/sports, it would be an upgrade from your 40D.

With your "L" glass, your greatest increase in image quality will come with a full frame camera. The 5DIII will handle the action/sports well, but I can't speak for the 6D.

But a full frame body would increase your budget considerably from your original question related to the T5 body.

I would probably look for a 60D, 70D, or 7D. I think the rebel body would be somewhat of a downgrade for you. (Are we talking about the T5 or T5i?)

Is the 7D going to give me quite a bit more than my 40D (other than video)?

Yes, less local contrast and more noise

The 7d has better AF, 8fps which is good and bad, a 90+ JPEG buffer, it also does video which I have never used. ISO goes to 12,800. It is a heavier camera.

I went from a XTi (10mp sensor) to a 7D (18 mp sensor). In good light I still think the XTi IQ is better, with slightly more saturation and easier PP. In every other area the 7D was much better. The Rebel line seems to offer good basic cameras with excellent IQ for the price.
Rising to the next level, xxD, the price rises for which there are improvements in ergonomics, AF and operating speed, the sensors stay the same. After this comes the specialist cameras, 5Ds, 7Ds, for more $s. I suggest that an evaluation of what you want the camera to do will determine where in the line up your sweet spot lies.

Used 7D would be a pretty safe bet, the prices have came down a lot!

The 40D was a classic! I loved mine.

Realize that shooting video on an older DSLR, like the 60D, you'll want to use manual focus because the AF in video mode is very poorly implemented.
The 70D has a huge advantage with its touch screen AF, especially for video beginners.

I've had a 40D (great cam for its day), a 7D and now a 70D.
The 70D would be a big upgrade for you.
If you don't mind manual focus AF, then the 7D would be a nice upgrade in every way including build quality as well as the obvious IQ and AF gains for stills.
