p.1 #5 · p.1 #5 · What's the difference between D800 and D810?

- 20% faster frame rate (5FPS @ 36MP, 6 FPS @ 25MP 1.2 crop, 7 FPS & 15 MP 1.5 crop (with grip))
- Notably better AF
- New group AF
- Native base ISO 64
- Massive buffer, about double that of the D800
- Significantly improved ergonomics (somewhat subjective), including rubber grip wrap around
- Better viewfinder (OLED overlay + brighter prism)
- Noticeably better rear LCD
- New dampening on the shutter
- Unbelievably quiet shutter (great for skittish subjects and weddings)
- EFC shutter in live view for minimizing tiny vibrations during critical work
- Face detection in the VF
- Highlight tone priority metering (works great, I love this feature)
- Better video (1080p/60) with various improvements including focus peaking & power aperture
- Much improved live view
- Better picture controls (0.25 steps added as well as Clarity option and "Flat" picture control)
- Better split screen leveling tool
- 'i' button for quick access to relevant settings
- Completely removed AA filter (D800 has one, and D800E has one, but oriented to negate the effect)

Probably a few more I'm forgetting.

D810 is a no-brainer if the budget allows.

Question: How many of these got migrated over to the D750?

Because those sound like great improvements.

How good is the face detection in VF. Can I simply activate it and whenever shooting portraits it will ALWAYS lock on the eyes.

Now I manually select my focus point to the eyes with my D700

I haven't spent much time with a D750 but the AF carried over, which was the most important thing (IMHO). It's even rated down to -3 EV (vs -2 EV), however testing seems to show little difference - both are class leading.

The face detection works just fine, however no, I would not trust any camera to "ALWAYS" lock on the eyes. It isn't infallible. The D810 buffer is still larger, the D810 is the only one with ISO 64 base, and the D810 has a better viewfinder. As good as the D750 is, there are still some compelling reasons to choose the D810, only if you need them of course. The D750 is so good that I will admit it would be hard to justify spending the extra $1000 unless you absolutely needed some of the D810 specific features (i.e. 64 ISO, 36 MP, buffer size, ergonomics, etc.)

If you are considering the D800, D800E and the D810. Just get the D810.

The D810 is a better all around camera with an expanded feature set that makes it better for
a wider number of photographic applications. One of the main advantages offered by the 8 series cameras is the ability to make really large sharp prints. If you do not need to do this, you probably would be very happy with the D750, with which you can also make excellent prints, just not as large. We're talking over 20X30 here! The D750 has a similar feature set as the D810 and slightly less build quality.

Is there any downside to using the electronic first curtain shutter on the D810?
Does it increase noise, amp glow, etc.?

Also, how is the amp glow of the D810 compared to the D800?

It only works in Live View and MLU, but otherwise doesn't seem to have any negative effects on the image.

Amp glow seems to be a non-issue with the D810, at one point I had 3 bodies, and none showed amp glow, even at higher ISOs. If you pump the exposure on a ISO 25,600 shot you might see a little bit, but that isn't practical. I belive LanceB has some black test images on here up to at least ISO 6400 showing no amp glow as well.

Focus Peaking No - Highlight Peaking/Blown highlight in Live view Yes,

D800E does have an OLPF with the AA part of it removed, but the d810 has no OLPF

Thanks - I see amp glow along the bottom edge of my images from my D800 at ISO6400 when I raise the shadows. This doesn't happen all that often, but it's disappointing to see a pink hue along the bottom that's difficult to remove.

One other question - does the live view improvements (no line skipping at 100% view) carry over to when you are tethered?
I currently use a tablet to shoot tethered/remote control with my D800 and it is hard to get a clear 100% view - just like when using the LCD on the back of the camera.

I was hoping that the D810 live view feed out also has improved image quality (sharpness) compared to the D800.
