I currently have the Canon 24/1.4 and 35/1.4. Love the 35/1.4, decent performance from the 24. I am considering the newer I.S. lenses, as they are smaller and lighter.

Can any Canon wedding shooters who have used both the older 1.4 primes as well as the newer image stabilized lenses share any comments / opinions? Stick with the older, faster primes? Newer, smaller, lighter lenses have the same quailty?

Two stops in speed vs. two stops of image stabilization?

Smaller, lighter or faster lenses for overall image quality? Any opinions are appreciated.

I have not used the new IS lenses.

Just know the IS does not stop motion of your subject.
If shooting people .. I prefer to have them stopped unless trying to invoke movement.

Rent and try each lens and make decision for ones self.
Does each lens provide the image and quality you desire?

I switched from the 24LII and 35L to the 24IS/28IS/35IS this year. I would only open up more than f2 like once a month, so I gave the IS lenses a shot.

my thoughts on the IS lenses:

-sharpness is basically the same
-the 35IS has less CA than the 35L
-35IS has round bokeh versus not on the 35L
-Rendering is nicer on the Ls
-Lighter weight and more compact (this is what sold me - makes me more nimble)
-IS - while not that useful for weddings, it does help for motion blur shots and detail shots
-They vignette a lot. Especially the 24. Stopping down a stop or two helps. This is what I dislike the most.
-Very occasionally I do miss not having a f1.4 aperture in low light.
-Cheaper (but you won't bank that much money if you already have the Ls)
-I think the AF on the 24L is better than the 24IS. Strangely, the 28IS has the best autofocus of any lens I've ever used, bar none.

I've seen some photos demonstrating pretty bad vignetting on the 35IS.

For myself, I'm often using the 24/1.4 lens at 1.4 to stop motion.

i love 35L and will not part it. I haven't used any IS lens you mention. I also like the contrast and color produced by 35L. That's also important factor for me to decide which lens i will buy.

The vignetting is the main thing holding me back from that lens.

Photography On The Net is one photo site I've never looked at. In fact, I had to do a Google search to see what you were referring to.

I own and use the 24L II, 35L, and 50L for a mixture of editorial, corporate, and wedding work (usually around f/3.5 - f/5.6). I've tried out the 28 IS and 35 IS but never fully enjoyed using them. I'd say image quality was on par, maybe sharper, but the build quality, lighter weight, and smaller bodies (while an awesome thing to have over 10 hour days) left a lot to be desired. I'm a little careless with my gear, so I always felt like the smaller primes were going to break when I set them down or bumped into walls/tables.

If your main goal is to cut weight, make the jump. If your main goal is to pick up IS, make the jump. If your main goal is for better IQ or save money, eh, you're fine where you're at.

Did you try the IS on 'em? How'd it seem?

IS works fine, though I usually don't lean on it with short lenses. Mainly use IS at 24/28mm for scene setters with people blurring by for movement, usually at f/16ish and 1/15 sec. Definitely not something I can do with much success on my 35L. I can usually get similar results on the 24L.

Id say the IS is more similar to the 24-105 more than a 70-200 or 100L. A little smoother, quieter, and working in the background. My longer lens IS are clunkier and a little jumpy.
