We'll be heading to Southern and Central California for some birding over the holidays. Our two main target bird spots are Bolsa Chica and Morro Bay, but looking for any suggestions or advice on other spots to visit while we're in the area.

Of course, we can't visit the Morro Bay area, without paying the elephant seals a visit - last time we watched two humongous males hacking at each other with a vengeance for at least half an hour over who'd be the new harem master. Unfortunately, this was just around dusk, but (very occasionally) just watching without taking pictures can be great too .

Thanks!

And before someone suggests Google, yes, of course - I was hoping that maybe someone more familiar with the area might be able to share some of the less frequented but still worth visiting locations .

Why not stop at the Sepulveda Basin wildlife reserve one your way down to Bolsa Chica . I discovered it about a year ago and there are quite a variety of birds Of course like anywhere else , some days are better than others.
If you go further south there is the San Elijio Lagoon which can be really good depending on tides, which is only 15 miles north of la Jolla which has many seabirds and mammals , particularly Brown pelicans, Brandts cormorants , sealions and regular harbor seals .

Be careful at BC. I remember a post from earlier this year about someone having their gear stolen after leaving BC ~ Ron

Thanks for mentioning this Ron, I just looked at some earlier posts about thefts at BC and it has made me think twice about going there alone.

I'd offer to meet you there, but it's a bit of a drive for me... ~ R

I will definitely be careful at BC, then. And I'd been dragging my feet on getting my new 7d2 and 500mm lens added to my home insurance policy. No more - first thing tomorrow morning!

There hasn't been any thefts at BC for awhile, but you need to always be careful.
Just do not leave equipment in your car.
San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine is also a good choice.

The Newport back bay can sometimes be interesting. A good chance at a California Gnatcatcher as well. If you go to BC, be careful about your lens case, when I leave my car I make sure that the case is visible and that you can see that it is empty, less tempting that way, if they think it is full they are more tempted to break in.

I second Tim's recommendation for SJWC. If that is slow then the Newport Back Bay is just down the road a few miles.

If you are going far enough south I would suggest checking out La Jolla Cove, lots of photo ops there. Also if you are spending time far south Borrego Springs may offer up something interesting that you don't normally see in the PNW. While I'm at it if are there long enough, granted this is a stretch, Salton Sea.

Have fun.

and if you're going on the right week, might want to spend 1/2 the day (am) at El Dorado regional park. the Fish and Wildlife stock trout there every other week. Good chance you may get shots of ospreys/cormorants/white pelicans fighting for trouts...we local called it a "zoo" during this time of the year. Think it cost about $7 to get in....
