The "sweet spot" on ALL camera lenses is actually around f5.6 to f8

NO, sharpness tails off. you'd only gain DOF.
Helps to have glass in hand AND to know what you're talking about.

My D750 is sharper and more accurate than my old D600

They could be sweetest from f2 thru f4, but most lenses are sharpest 1 to 2 stops from either end. Just saying.

^ f1.4 glass is typically best f2 > f2.8 That's where it's SHARPEST and after f4 they'll tail off dramatically.
Do the math ....that's 1 or 2 stops Regardless, nobody buys fast glass to shoot at f5.6 > f8
So, in plain english....they are "sweetest" & sharpest where I mentioned. What's so hard to understand
I own many great AF lenses: 200 f2/35 f1.4/50 f1.4 A's/300 f2.8 etc. and know exactly were the sweet spot
on every lens lies. They sure a hell aren't at f5.6 > f8 where previous posters suggest. So WTF, dude?!
Even my 70-200 f2.8 VR II is f3.5 and the old PJ 17-35 f2.8 is f4

I don't have empirical data to back me up but I do find it hard to believe that all f1.4 glass sharpness will fall off DRAMATICALLY after f2.8

Just sayin' Not that I don't believe you, but I have never heard this.

Also, please use some tact when responding. Your tone is a bit too defensive.

I'm kind of in your corner....(hope this isn't too off-topic)...

I find that 2 stops down from wide open produces images from most fast lenses (1.4 ->2.8) uniformly sharp from edge to edge...
Higher quality slower lenses (2.8 and smaller) can do as much one F-stop down....e.g. a quality F4 lens can look very good @ 5.6

As such, I have no qualms with smaller, cheaper slower lenses (perhaps without any VR/IS) for reasonably lit situations...though the term "reasonable" has been refined/widened this past year or two with sensors' high IQ output @ 3200....these sensors have given new life to slower lenses that perform well @ F4-5.6...while allowing faster lenses to shoot @ 2.8...

Yes, "nobody buys fast glass to shoot at f5.6 > f8"....fast lenses are often chosen for their OUT-OF-FOCUS bokeh complementing the in-focus subject framed/composed where the lens is sharp wide open...and this...fast primes (F1.4-2) and zooms (F2-2.8) that aren't so hot wide-open at the edges can now be used on these new sensors at F2.8-4 where they're very good, beyond which there may be no significant improvement (other than increased depth of field/focus) and where slower quality zooms can match the more expensive faster lenses...

...and this is how I have built my kit...rather than compromising, expecting a single lens to "do it all", I've complemented slower cheaper zooms with faster primes, and can "get the shot" in nearly any situation....

The 'monkey has lost most of his tolerance for those who don't know
what they're talking about. Apologies to the OP for extending the OT,
and anyone that was 'hurt' by my candor. Tellin' it like it is for 10 yrs
now...old habits are hard to break. FWIW, if I could type with my beard
that would leave one hand free for a brewski and the other to goose my
wife. That's a win/win in my world.

I disagree with this as well. Just as one example, the 200/2 is sharpest from about F2.8-F4.0, F5.6 onward it is technically worse. F8 is rarely the single sharpest aperture on a lens, however it does even out the sharpness in the corners nicely at the expense of some (often unnoticeable) sharpness.

A more accurate statement might be that most lenses are their absolute best 1-2 stops down from wide open, rather than to say ALL lenses are sharpest best at F5.6-F8, which is plainly not true. Most are best at F2.2-5.6 (depending on the lens of course) in my experience, I don't have a single lens that isn't at it's sharpest until F8.

Lens design must be considered as well, since the "Sweet spot" may include some other properties such as bokeh. You don't shoot an 85/1.4 at F5.6-F8 if you want great bokeh, and sharpness falls off beyond 5.6.

Dunno man.. my 200 f/2 is sharpest at any aperture Stopping down only increases DOF.

Hey Will, weren't you looking for a DIY carrying solution for En-EL15 batteries? I just realized you can just hide them in your beard.. j/k

As far as aperture sharpness with lenses, I'm thinking about purchasing the 135 F2, and I can tell from pixel peepers I won't be shooting at F2 much. Even just going to 2.8 or 3.5 makes that particular lens MUCH sharper.
