Do the math ....that's 1 or 2 stops Regardless, nobody buys fast glass to shoot at f5.6 > f8
So, in plain english....they are "sweetest" & sharpest where I mentioned. What's so hard to understand
I own many great AF lenses: 200 f2/35 f1.4/50 f1.4 A's/300 f2.8 etc. and know exactly were the sweet spot
on every lens lies. They sure a hell aren't at f5.6 > f8 where previous posters suggest. So WTF, dude?!
Even my 70-200 f2.8 VR II is f3.5 and the old PJ 17-35 f2.8 is f4...Show more →
I'm kind of in your corner....(hope this isn't too off-topic)...
I find that 2 stops down from wide open produces images from most fast lenses (1.4 ->2.8) uniformly sharp from edge to edge...
Higher quality slower lenses (2.8 and smaller) can do as much one F-stop down....e.g. a quality F4 lens can look very good @ 5.6
As such, I have no qualms with smaller, cheaper slower lenses (perhaps without any VR/IS) for reasonably lit situations...though the term "reasonable" has been refined/widened this past year or two with sensors' high IQ output @ 3200....these sensors have given new life to slower lenses that perform well @ F4-5.6...while allowing faster lenses to shoot @ 2.8...
Yes, "nobody buys fast glass to shoot at f5.6 > f8"....fast lenses are often chosen for their OUT-OF-FOCUS bokeh complementing the in-focus subject framed/composed where the lens is sharp wide open...and this...fast primes (F1.4-2) and zooms (F2-2.8) that aren't so hot wide-open at the edges can now be used on these new sensors at F2.8-4 where they're very good, beyond which there may be no significant improvement (other than increased depth of field/focus) and where slower quality zooms can match the more expensive faster lenses...
...and this is how I have built my kit...rather than compromising, expecting a single lens to "do it all", I've complemented slower cheaper zooms with faster primes, and can "get the shot" in nearly any situation....
