You are worrying about the wrong thing here if your deciding factor is sharpness. Both of these lenses produce outstanding image quality, and you are unlikely to see any difference in your photographs. Perhaps if you conduct controlled, clinical tests and stare at 100% crops on the screen side-by-side you may be able to convince yourself that you see a difference somehow, but it will be completely irrelevant.

The real question is whether you need IS or not.

I agree with Dan. I have the non IS. It's been my primary lens since i got it and i'm still in awe of the photos i can take with it. General opinion seems to that the non-IS performs better than the IS, but once the shutter speed drops below 1/200 i would happily trade some of the inherent sharpness for some IS-assisted sharpness.

I'd use the lens for astrophotography so the IS is irrilevant

The comparisons at The Digital Picture may be what you are looking for. His results mirror my real world experience with both lenses.

According the The Digital Picture comparisons, IS is better than non IS at corners....at 200mm .
At 85mm non IS is better instead........

Then, I think you should get something else.

I've owned all of the EF 70- and 80-200mm L lenses at f/2.8 and f/4 (IS and not), except for the 70-200/2.8L (non-IS) that you're asking about. That's why I didn't pipe up, until now.

They're all excellent lenses, but if you want to get the best IQ from centre to corner, especially for shots at 'infinity', then you might want to consider some "Alt" manual focus prime lenses, specifically;

at the shorter end:

Leica Elmarit R 90/2.8 E55
Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 100/3.5

at the longer end:

Leica Apo-Telyt-R 180/3.4
Mamiya A 200/2.8 APO

Don't get me wrong. I have some dynamite EF autofocus lenses, but when I have a specialty application, I use special lenses.

I know that the non-IS has a good deal less longitudinal CA (purple fringing and such) which might make it nicer for astro??

The non-IS also has better micro-contrast at 200mm f/2.8.

OTOH the non-IS while crisp to corner on APS-C seems to drop off to the corner on FF. I never tested it, but I've heard the IS holds up better on FF corners even though it's not quite as crisp in the center region.

If you could get by with f/4, the f/4 IS combines the best of both worlds (as does the 2.8 IS II and even moreso, of course the price on that might be too much).

Just to summarize a bit, it is my view that every 70-200mm lens that Canon has made recently is a great optical performer. That doesn't mean they are exactly identical, but it does mean that sharpness is likely the least important distinguishing characteristic among them. Way more important, it seems to me, are things like:

1. Cost
2. Weight/bulk
3. IS or not
4. f/4 or f/2.8
5. And, related to all of this, how these lenses fit in with other lenses you have.

Fwiw, I never liked the IS mk 1 beyond 165mm.
However, if you need IS, there is no substitute.

I have liked them all and not smart enough to distinguish pictures that came from one or the other. This is one of those times you can't go wrong. Find a deal and grab any one of them!

Just get a 200 2.8L, then see what you need.

When I went from the 70-200 non IS to the IS MK 1 I found the image quality to not be as good as the original lens. (not by a huge amount, but noticeable.)

The MK II is far superior and IMO worth the extra money.

MkII is over budget.
870$ is a nice deal for a second hand non IS? (keep in mind i live in Europe, prices are higher than US)

How is its performance in the 70-199mm range?

For me, no matter how much I twisted that ring on the lens, it just took the picture in and out of focus as opposed to zooming....
