p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking to second shoot! NJ-PH-NY

Hey everyone,

Just started second shooting under a photographer in NJ, ~5 months ago (10ish weddings)

The owner is grooming me for his company but I would really like to experience other photographers aswell
as get all the work I can. I'm working on getting a portfolio together which is hard being a second shooter and not shooting on my own.

If there's anyone around the area needing a second please let me know, I will drive anywhere.... PM me, ask any questions you want. I'm here for the long haul.

Thanks!
-Paul

Hey Paul!

There are loads of talented shooters here from that region. Here is my advice to get hired:

1) Post work. Someone isn't going to buy what they can't see.

2) Comment on threads. A primary photographer doesn't want a stranger around her clients.

3) Be kind. A primary doesn't want a dick around his clients.

Do these things over time and you will increase your chances of getting hired.

Best wishes,

Chuck

Also, make it easy to be hired. I don't want to email, call you, ask you questions. I already have 5 people that I can call that I have known for years that are top level photographers. Why should I hire you? Know what I mean? Hang out here, participate in the community, get to know people, and let them get to know you.

You're right, I need to be more active since I'm new around here.

Thanks for the advice.

Any ideas on how to get a portfolio together? I've asked the photographer I work under if I could use the photos I've taken for a portfolio but he wasn't too excited about that.

I think you should taper off working with that photographer. It's easy to understand his point of view but you have to look out for yourself, as well.

Gotta love the people who feel that by keeping their 2nd's from developing, they're "reducing their competitors"... as though competing with 40 other photographers for every bride is different from competing with 41 other photographers.

You guys are assuming a little much about his primary if you ask me...

Paul, I would recommend just asking the photographer if you could throw together a private gallery that you could share with other photogs for the purpose of getting more 2nd gigs.... not for getting clients.

Also, Paul, you could tell us a few things:

1) Gear? What do you use?

2) I need to see a few good shots. What separates you from the guy at bestBuy?

3) regarding selling yourself to another photo studio... ask yourself why you want to do that. Do you wanna run photo booths for $100/wedding, be some other photographer's b*tch for $200-300/wedding, or go swimming in a room full of money like Uncle Scrooge?

Well it seems I went about this all wrong!

I asked the Photographer for my photos and he eventually said yes.
Ill be posting some of my work up soon hopefully.

Let's kill this thread for now, I've got some work to do.

(I did always like Scrooge)
