p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · COLLEGE BASKETBALL + 7D Mark II

After 2 years without touching a camera, I decided it was time to get back into it Sold my two 1D Mark IIIs (1 is still available!) and bought the 7D Mark II. This game was my 1st time using the new cam. I no longer have sideline privileges, so these were taken from the crowd and cropped. All were taken with the 7D Mark II and EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. ISO 1600 /// f/2.8 /// 1/1,000 sec or faster.

thought maybe this was going to be a high ISO post.
Looked at 1600 ISO and thought, boy would I love to shoot in that light.
H.S. BB is at 16,000 if not 20,000, ouch.
Great shots from the stands. Thanks for sharing.

Nice job....basketball is tough to take with the action and light levels.....new camera and your skills are both impressive

Kenneth - thanks for the comment! Yes the lighting was superb in that gym; high school is typically much worse.

WestFalcon - appreciate the compliment!

Yep, your timing is superb if you're coming from a two year absence. I'm guessing you like the camera?

Yeah, I was thinking the same. I typically shoot in the 8-10K range at a mid tier college. 1600 would be sweet. At that ISO I would be tempted to go 3.2 or 3.5 for a little bit more DOF since I shoot from the baseline/sideline a lot.

Anyways, a nice group of shots.

lhryshko - Thank you! Yes, the camera was a joy to shoot. I had the original 7D awhile back and didn't like it...missed so many shots that my 1D Mark III would have kept in focus. But this 7D Mark II is incredibly responsive; the new AF system is worlds better.

ggreene - Thanks! Yes upping the DOF is a great idea if on the sideline. If only all indoor events were this well lit!

How does it compare in fast moving, low-light sports with the 1D Mark III?

BobMarkey - I can't answer this question fairly (wish I could). Back when I was using the 1D Mark III, I was shooting for the University yearbook, newspaper, and athletic department, so I was always on the sidelines and therefore rapid changes in focus distance were the norm. Now that those days are over, I'm in the stands, so the focus distance is usually hovering around infinity. Soccer, football, and volleyball are already over. If I have the opportunity to get a really close seat at some event in the future then perhaps I can experiment further. Based on this basketball game, though, the 7D Mark II was phenomenal. This is the 1st time I've been happy with a non-1-Series body.

Wow. I've shot HS basketball in at least 50 gyms and have never, ever been above ISO 8000.

It was so dark in there I wondered how the players could play.

You have it really rough since you need higher ISO than I need on the worst football fields.

I have to shoot at 16000 all the time for HS basketball....I also have the 7D mark 2 and 70-200 2.8 Are you using case 4 AI focus? How many AF points? I use case 4 and 1st and 2nd image priority set to focus I also use 4 points expansion

Great pictures here.

Nice to see that the 7d Mark 2 takes pictures of actual humans and not just birds!

That's awesome - and very welcome!

If you know what you are doing you can shoot basketball with a 4x5 monorail.

The gear isn't that big a deal as long as it is comfortable to you.

gqllc007 - I'm not sure about the different AF cases here. I bought the camera, charged it, and went to shoot. I still have yet to go through the manual and make sense of all the menu options that the 1D Mark III did not have. AI Servo was used and I messed around with center spot AF, center AF, center + 4 expand, and 9 or 12 active AF points. I found myself liking the center spot and center + 4 expand the most in this situation.

kapytalyst - Haha I've been dying to do some birding but haven't had the time for a full outing like that yet. Yes, shooting our own species was quite fun though

Daniel Smith - Agreed, skill is definitely required, however, it's a lot nicer to shoot with a camera that can do a great job with AF tracking and high burst rates. I started out with the original EOS Digital Rebel that had a 4 frame buffer @ 2.5 fps and the slowest buffer empty time I've ever seen. During long plays on the soccer and football fields, it was such a pain. I missed hundreds of shots simply because I was waiting for those 4 images to clear.

Canonshooter, great shots with your 7Dmkii. I've shot VB and FB with mine, haven't taken it to the basketball game yet, but that's coming up.

With shots like these you don't need sideline access! I love the angles and cropping expertise you used. I may have to move from the baseline to the stands. Great job!
