p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Family photos at the park

The Friday after Thanksgiving I had the opportunity to photograph a family that my wife knows. I have never photographed a family that I had never met before and was a little nervous to say the least. We went to a local park and had a blast. After doing a few posed photos we just turned the kids loose and I pulled out the 70–200 for some candids. Mom was happy with the results and so was I.

All comments are welcome and encouraged. Thank you.

They all say "Content Protected by Owner" instead of showing the actual image.

Ooops that was embarrassing. I think I fixed it. Can you see the images now?

In the first pic, looks like a great place to shoot.
A couple of things that would have improved the image greatly.

You should have shot at their angle and not shoot down at them.

The posing could have been better, mum and the little one are fine but I would have had dad
closer to mum and his right shoulder just behind her. Also have his legs behind him.

Same with the young man I would have preferred his legs tucked behind him. The young lady I would have had her position her body at 90 degrees to camera left and then have her turn her head towards the camera. I always try to keep subjects nice and tight in photos like these.

Regards
Bud

I like 4 and 9 best of the group. Nice shots!

In #1, I immediately noticed how the break from grass to shrub line is across their heads. Any visual break like that (a horizon, a fence line, a distant tree line, etc.) should be avoided across necks and heads. I think if you were a little lower as previously said, you could have avoided that.

Also, I always try to ensure that nobody has their legs apart directly facing camera, in particular, girls in skirts (young or old).

Finally, I think the white balance is a bit inconsistent across these shots. A little greenish in some and a little cool in others.

I really like the one with the three kids in a line and the one in the tree.

Thanks to all for the comments.

@Bud, Thanks for posing tips. We started out a little tighter but that young girl, who is actually a sweetheart, was a total wiggle worm. Every time the shutter snapped she would stand up and try to leave and dad would have to grab her before she could run away.

@Ed, I actually do have some photos with the young girl in a more "modest" pose but this is the one with the best expressions and I don't have the PS skills to paste in a better pose of her. I am working on an uncalibrated monitor so thanks for the WB heads up.
