I am still set on the 7DmkII,but I have had full frame for so long. I like the 6fps of the 5DmkIII. Does it have the ability to come close to a Sports and Wildlife camera? I have a 1DsmkII and I like the files. It is an old model. Does the 5DmkIII have sufficient upgrades processer wise to make it as a good upgrade?

I like and use the 5DIII for sports and wildlife. I prefer the perspective and bokeh of full frame and the 1Dx is a little pricey for me. The 5DIII suits my needs just fine in fact I'm looking to pick up a second one.

Center point AF and pretty much any Canon in the last five years really isn't terrible at sports. I've used the 5D3 shooting dirt bikes and it was great. Not 1D kind of great, but still great. Put just a little bit of extra effort into tracking and it will be fine.

I noticed they are $2200-2500 used.

You can pick up a 1D4 for that.

5D3 if you want a jack of all trades full frame.
7D2 if you want a sports/wildlife camera.

I have a 5D3; haven't used a 7D/7D2.

Sometimes people confuse "is optimized to be the very best for" with "have the ability to do."

The 5DIII (and other cameras) can do a fine job with these subjects, especially in the hands of a skillful photographer.

Dan, I have a 1DsmkII( something wrong in the shutter, going to K&H) and a 1DmkIIn. I have had the best of both worlds. I need a new camera. I am not sure which way to go?

The 5D III is definitely the jack of all trades (and master of none). AF and buffer throughput are good, but mechanically it's not a 1D series.

Rich, it all depends on what you are shooting and what you will be satisfied with. Its FPS is a limiting factor, more so for some sports than others.
If you get good at anticipating action on the field, you can make up for some of that.

Master of none? That is funny. Easily the highest resolution eos body.

Anyway, if you liked the 1DsII I would think you will like the 5DIII as well if not more. I prefer mine over my 1DsIII in most situations.

Depends on the sport really... While 6 fps is pretty good, it is not 10 or 12....The biggest difference I've found (either with a 1dx or 1d mk IV) is not the per second rate, but the half second rate... 5-6 frame burst vs 3 frame burst in the same amount of time is a huge difference...

If you feel you need the speed, forget the 7d2. Spend a few bucks more and pick up a 1d Mk IV.

Admittedly there is a world of difference between 6 and 10 frames.

I wish my 1D3 had the buffer of my 5D3.

I shoot casual sporting events (mixed: ball, MMA, track and field) with both and find the 1D3 monsters sports in good light - apart from the weak buffer.

The 5D3 does okay. Just okay.

Neither are optimal.

I'd seriously consider the choice between a 1D4 and 7D2 if you have the cash lying around. Noting that the 7D2 has some useful improvements but is no 1 series.

Sure, except perhaps the IQ below ISO 400 on the 1Ds III...
A highest res EOS body is a bit of an oxymoron.

I can only speak to wildlife (not sport). I first reach for my 5diii ahead of my 1div or previous 7d in all but the most reach limited situations. On a recent trip to Africa I noticed that after sorting through about 5000 shots my final keeper set of 100 or so was almost entirely from the 5diii - even when I had taken shots of a given critter with both cameras. Put simply the files are sharper from the 5diii and the af performance and 6fps more than meet my needs.

Having a few more frames per sec would be nice, but I've found it does good enough for me for sports and wildlife...

I'd recommend a 1D Mark IV at the current price level over a 7D MK II. My 5D MK III does sports just fine. I use 1 shot, none of the machine gun stuff, so FPS figures don't impress me. There may be a very few cases like trying to capture a baseball when it hits the bat, but most of the time, I can anticipate the right moment.

I'm not one to wade thru hundreds of photos looking for the one that got away.

I shot NBA basketball with a 5d3, and it does an outstanding job with af. The only lacking sports thing might be its burst rate, but that hasn't hindered me yet. The af works so well, I can just pick up the camera and get the action immediately without tracking through the viewfinder.
