This morning I went to my friend's mother funeral and I saw a touching picture I could have taken with the iphone, the six male brothers carrying the coffin and going up the stone stair to the church for the mass.

I didnt take it and I could have done it without anybody noticing it.

I think it would have been a nice picture for my brother friend to remember such a strong moment !!!

A limit to what?

An ethical limit? Nothing wrong with documenting the day. Some families do this.
I seem to remember a very iconic image from a presidents funeral.
One Mr Kennedy here in the states.

Jaime, you have to set your own limits. It's rarely about right or wrong, and for me it becomes more of a philosophical ideal.

What is it you really want to do?

What is most important to you?

Put yourself into that and you'll be in a good place.

If you took a picture at a funeral with a real camera I think people would approve. But with a phone...sometimes that really agitates folks. The process of taking a picture with a phone just isn't subtle enough, at least that's my guess why people find it so annoying.

People have been taking photos of bodies in caskets since the early 1900's and some before that. My family has several photos of dead folks in their caskets that have ben passed down. Actually....some families used to pose with the bodies just after they died.

I think that if done tastefully, there shouldn't be an issue.

There won't be an issue at mine.

Because the majority of people snapping on cellphones generally are doing it for their own selfish reasons (regardless of what they want to tell others).

Sorry to hear about your mates mother Jaime.

All the best to him and his family.

I wouldn't have took the photo myself.

Taking photos at a funerals where I live is a cultural no-no.

The same thing here, this is why I am kind of asking if the glory of such a great touching capture to give away to my friend weeks or months later is worth the "problems" it may cause me if I am caught taking it in the middle of a respectful crowd of relatives and close friends !!!

Much depends on local customs and cultures especially those involving religious views. What you might do at a Catholic funeral in the U.S. you might not dare think of doing at a Catholic funeral in Spain.

Our family have a picture of my younger brother and I coming out of the church following our fathers casket. Its B&W taken in July 1969, I was 13. It was taken by a professional photographer that was a friend of the family.

The photo is priceless.

We have photos of my son's graveside service (taken by the photographer who did his wedding 2 years earlier) and they are very precious to us in remembering the military honors and fly-over. When a few close friends and family members have lost loved ones, I shared how special those photos were for us and I offered to take photos for them. Each person accepted my offer and, without exception, the photos have been greatly appreciated and cherished. Of course, I stay back during the graveside and try to be unobtrusive as possible. To be honest, the photos can be very helpful for the family in remembering what was a blur at the time and can also help in moving through the grief process.
