IS was silent and worked fine for the test shots inside the shop. I will give it a try this weekend.

Date Code: UX and mount has minimum or no wear on it.

With case and they were able to find keys

I actually ask them to ship the lens (out of state thing ) and will be getting in couple of days. I am paying online with Discover (5% cashback)

Congratulations on the purchase of the 500 f4 IS v1! You will enjoy this lens and the images it can produce.

This lens was released in 1999 so earlier copies maybe harder to resell than newer ones.

Can I ask for clarification on the release of this lens? Coincidentally, there is one for sale locally and the seller says it has a UM date code. Online research suggests U = Utsunomiya, Japan and M = 1998. Is this possible? Seller claims overall condition is excellent but again, to your point, are older lenses worth (marginally) less, given their age?
Thanks...

Camster, it has happened often that Canon commences lens fabrication one year in advance of the official lens release date. That way the release date is made meaningful because around that date Canon is able to start shipping the goods.

That makes perfect sense Peter, thanks. Oh no. Does that mean my 2014 Honda was built last year? Dammit!

Thanks Guys!

Yesterday, Store had a couple of 500mm F4 lenses in-stock with similar condition.

One with the Date Code and one without the Date code (as per the store rep.. mount was replaced by canon). I was reluctant to go with the repaired one - not easy to figure the age of the lens and store was not sure about the kind of repair done by canon.

UX1133 (Nov 2009) is not too old and what do you think? canon made any changes to the lens internals (in 10 year span) like improving IS or improved glass characteristics etc?

A UX date code is a new lens. Mine is a UW and AFAIK, Canon hasn't made(and doesn't need to make) any changes to this lens.

I wouldn't get too hung up on this date code thing. The lens could have been made at the end of it's production run which would have been UY and changed hands a few times and beat to crap. It could have been used by the ocean and endured lots of salt spray shooting whatever and subsequent ownwers wouldn't know.

If the external condition is good, everything works as it should and the glass is clean and the lens is free of fungus, then you have yourself a very fine lens which has been cared for throughout it's lineage. Enjoy!!

Mine's a UY (2010). That's when I bought it new. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a 2009 if it was in decent condition and everything worked. Having the 30 day warranty you mentioned earlier should make it even easier.

Thanks for the all the links! very helping.

I was looking at the accessories. A few questions.

1. Canon wide lens strap will fit this lens? and what is the benefit of the version B of the strap.
2. I am looking at the kinesis long lens bag. L511 seems to me the most compact option (with hood reversed) for the 500mm F4 IS. Any useful side accessories with the bag?

Thanks!
