p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sandpiper Assortment

I visited Jones Beach today and the clouds got thicker and thicker leaving me with dark gray conditions. At least it was warm so it was a pleasant stroll on the beach.

The darker sandpipers with the hooked beak are dunlin, the lighter ones are sanderling.

They're nice, Morris, but I would have upped the ISO to 1000 and gone for a faster shutter speed.

Bad weather makes for good Morris....you do make the most out of the opportunity to be creative regardless of the conditions.

Very neat, Morris. I love how you play with slow shutter to create the motion blur with this fast little birds.

Interesting "look" to these with the flash eyes highlights but the blurred movement. Last two for me.
I might try to make more of a pano out of the last one and remove the white from the bottom totally and most from the top. That would accent that colour and the movement.
How you do that with a flash is beyond me!

thank you Paul,
What you suggest will produce photos that look like very one elses so even the best are still ordinary. I looked at some of my published photos. Both of the ones that National Geographic picked up use motion blur and of the two that Popular Photography used, one had motion blur and the other was high key and a centered vertical composition. I do like to use pretty light for my blurs, it was not there.

Thank you Don,
I like your idea of removing some of the white frame for the last image

Thank you Kdacharya,
The first few times I showed this type of work I was concerned how people would react. Now I'm quite confident.

Thank you Lilki,
The beamer is a good tool, it can take some getting used to as it changes the way some flash systems behave

The last one is beautiful, you early master the use of flash and low shutter speed.

Thank you Michael,

I tried Don's suggestion and did not like the result. The balanced natural frame dose a lot for the composition.

As for the flash, the subject distance is only about 20 to 25 feet well withing the range of the SB910 even without the Better Beamer. With the better beamer I frequently see an effect at 50 to 100 feet and catchlight in the eyes for hundreds of feet.
