p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · DX or DG lens on D7100 Pros/Cons

Might be a dumb question but I searched FM and couldn't find an answer. The Nikon folks on this forum have been really helpful with other D7100 questions I've had.

I'm looking for a zoom lens, now that I have some money to purchase, to cover somewhere between 24-70 mm, in between my wide angle and tele. Thinking 2.8 at least.

I've seen many that are DG lenses. What will I gain (other than using it on full frame body down the road) or what will be the pitfalls of using a DG.

Will the crop factor of 1.3 increase focal length as it does on a Dx lens? Folks here make recommendations to me already regarding DX lens but any recommendations on a good DG lens, Sigma, Tamron or the non pricey Nikons? Under $500.

Ummm… What's a DG lens?

Unless you're referring to the Sigma DG line (which seems to indicate a special lens coating)?

A lens is a lens. I have a Darlot Petzval that focuses at three inches (75mm) on my Chamonix 4x5. Because the film size is 20 square inches, the image has room to spread out and this is a very wide angle lens on that camera. I had a Nikon F-mount made so I can also use this Petzval on my Nikons. On my D800E, it still focuses at 75mm. On the D800E, with its tiny sensor that 's less than 2 square inches, the lens is a portrait length telephoto. On my D7100, the lens still focuses at 75mm. On this smaller sensor a 75mm lens is a medium telephoto. The lens does not change no matter what camera it's put on. It will always be a 75mm f3.5 lens. What changes is how much of its the image circle you use.

As for your question, you're highly likely going to find that 24mm isn't anywhere near wide enough, unless you have another lens that is wider. Now, exactly what are you wanting the lens to do? What sort of photos do you intend to take? That's the whole thing--match the lens to the use.

I use a Tamron 17-50 2.8 on my D7000, the one without image stabilisation, its cheaper and sharper than the Nikon equivalent but not so well made. The 35/1.8 DX is also very good.
I had hoped to use my 24/2.8 Nikkor on it but it doesn't do well, possibly because of the pixel density of the sensor, so would be even worse on the D7100 I suspect.
Anything from 35 up I have does well, with some of the softer edges cropped off

sorry. I should have said FF Full frame lens. Dg does come from the Sigma lens that I was looking at.

I have a Tokina 12-24 and Tamron 70-300. I'm looking to fill the void of 24-70 + or -.

Hmm, I have both the Tokina and Tamron you mention on a D7000 and am hoping to pick up a D7100 soon. I fill that gap with the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 DC "C" OS Macro - very sharp and relatively light and fast. Many will mention the Nikon 17-55, but the Siggy is 1/2 the weight and 1/3 the $$, and the Nikon won't do closeup as well. Great walkabout lens and a compliment to the Tokina and Tamron mentioned - makes an excellent travel kit. Toss in the Nikon 35 f1.8 DX for low light work, and you're good to go.
Regards, Ron

What kinds of photos are you going to take with the lens? Why do you think you need f2.8? These are the first and most basic questions to ask.

RJB6893

I used both the Tokina and Tamron on my D300 with outstanding results. They play nicely with the D7100 also

I've actually been considering the Sigma 17-70 and Tamrom 28-74 for the go between.

Thanx for your response

No, it indicates Full Frame (their DC is a cropper)

The Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS is a great lens, and an incredible bargain at about $325 new on eBay, imported directly from Japan.

I bought mine from WinTokyo I think. It arrived in 2 days from Japan. They sell in the US for $469 to $519 right now. Apparently Sigma lost a patent dispute (in Japan only) on the OS, so they sell there for under $300.

DxO rates it as the sharpest standard zoom on the D7100. It vignettes a bit wide open, which is not unusual. If you have enough light that is an easy fix in Lightroom/Photoshop.

Otherwise it is very well built, very solid, has OS (VR.) I can't see buying any other lens in that range right now. Unless you wanted to go with the absolutely fantastic Sigma 18-35 1.8 for about $700-$800.

Given the range you're looking to cover, you can go with either an FX or a DX lens.

The DX lens, like Sigma's excellent 17-50, will have a more useful range on its own, but will be limited to DX and therefore less useful if you upgrade to an FX body in the future.

An FX lens however, like say Tamron's excellent 28-75/2.8 or the Nikon 24-85VR, will have a less useful range on its own but will plug the gap you have just fine.

I've owned both options over the years. I find I prefer going the DX route for the extra flexibility it gives me when carrying a single lens.

Note also the DX option is usually cheaper for a given lens spec.

I think the only real benefit of the FF lens is its usefulness if you ever decide to upgrade to a FF camera. Camera bodies can come and go, but good lenses seem to hang around forever.

The other advantage to the FF lens is if you are willing to give up a little wide to get more reach. A 24-70/2.8 is a 35-105/2.8 equivalent, a great range for people shooting on DX.

The Best DX zoom I've found for my D7100 is the Nikon 17-55 which is a pro style DX lens

A DX lens can only be used on a DX camera like your D7100. Where a DX lens makes sense is with wide angle zooms such as the Nikon 10-24mm f3.5 lens. The FX 18-35mm f3.5G will provide the picture angles or field of view on your camera that is like a 27-52mm f3.5 lens and no nearly as wide.

The 24-70mm will actually provide higher quality images on a D7100 than on a D610/D750 as only the center of the lens, which is much less likely to cause distortion, is being used. If 36-105mm is wide enough for your needs then its is and excellent choice. The DX equivalent is the 17-55mm f2.8 which provides the same picture angles on the D7100 as the 24-70 on the D610 - only it is not as sharp as the 24-70mm lens.

The DX lens can be used on any FX camera that support DX mode, like D610.
