Not a bird-person but this looks fine to me - nice work.

Scott and others can provide more in-depth analysis.

Nice pose, eye contact, some excellent feather detail and success in preserving the whites.

Looks a bit dark and a bit over-sharpened/odd in the whitish area below the eye.
Could you post SOOC or a link to the RAW? I think we might be able to help with the processing.
Also, the EXIF to help with technical advice?

BTW, I don't think I ever saw a Grey Heron in the US. I am used to seeing tones of GBH in Florida all the way up into New England. And the only Grey....in Africa. I have got to some research on this.

More photo oriented than birder, but I think is a Great Blue Heron. While the feathers on the body are looking pretty dark and grey, they can be. And I think the image is a bit under-exposed.
Couldn't find any clear reference to Grey Herons migrating to Canada or residing there and their usual habitat is Africa and Europe.

Thank-you for the replies. Plenty of these here on the West Coast of Canada. The bay we go to, on any given day is full of people shooting with a myriad of lenses. Scott, I tried my hand at the Unsharp Mask and others in PSE, and maybe went a little too far...But a good tip to be more on the ball with those for sure.

Shot with the d7000,@5.6,1/640 sec, iso 100. on 70-200 2.8 @ 190mm. Ill post the raw file later as Flickr only allows 3 uploads/day.

Much goodness captured ... although it seems underexposed, etc. @ processing.

Brought up the levels and lowered the gamma.

Very nice shot of what I would call a great blue heron, but possible known differently elsewhere.

Very sharp, and Kents rework is spot on.

Consider perhaps a little more negative space on the sides and top and a little less on the bottom?
