I emailed Sigma and this is their reply to me:

Hello Joseph,

This behavior is related to the operation of the OS unit of the lens when it is used in conjunction with your Nikon D750. The OS unit stays in communication with the camera body for about 1 minute after a camera’s auto-off feature shuts down the camera between exposures while still in the on mode. This is normal and will not damage your lens or camera in any way. At Sigma we use a “Full Floating Element” in our Optical Stabilization system, the element will move around when the lens

Thanks for this. IIRC, didn't Sigma fall foul of a Nikon VR patent infringement not so long ago? Maybe this full floating element in the 24-105 is their response to that which makes its behaviour different than the (slightly) older 120-300? I'll stop thinking about this behaviour now and just enjoy shooting this lens......

You're right Graeme...According to DXO, the Sigma has indeed, a slightly brighter T-Stop (.2)
The build quality and mechanics of the Sigma is miles ahead of the Nikon IMO.

I think the reason people haven't jumped on it is because the 24-105 is relatively new, and there's still not a lot of review out. Heck, I've only heard of this lens 2 weeks ago! lol Plus it's back-ordered everywhere. Just give it some time

I've had mine for nearly 9 months! Although to be fair, I did pester Sigma's sales team in the UK to find out when and where I'd be most likely to find one. The Canon mount was released much earlier than the Nikon mount and there are quite a few reviews around but the Nikon mount reviews seem to be fairly thin on the ground.

There was a recent announcement via Canon rumours that the Sigma 24-105 production has been placed on indefinite hold in all mounts (the Sony is scheduled to be released soon), but this has been publicly refuted by a source (photographer/Sigma lens tester) very close to Sigma USA. Maybe Canon is feeling the pressure on its 24-105 f/4 L sales

Anyway, here's a few more shots with mine from a gig at the German Christmas market in Bristol last week (all wide open and pushing the ISO pretty hard).....

They range from 3200 to 6400, which for a D800 is getting pretty high without fiddling with NR in post. Blue amp noise starts to appear in the shadows from around 6400 and up, although I've had the odd shot that worked quite well at 10189 or 12800..... These were all shot under tungsten light too.

Do the shots you posted have significant NR in post?? They look very clean...

I assume you shot them RAW...

There's no NR in any of these. Downsizing from 36MP `hides` the noise in the D800 files. You can see it clearly at 100% on a monitor, although that's like viewing an 8' wide image! Noise is much less evident if the exposure is nailed too. All of these were on the money, with the exception of a +0.24 push on the photo of the ladies with the beer steins - I fluffed that one (don't tell trenchmonkey! ) All shot in RAW.

Will, I just noticed, she even has her very own copyright logo..... As your Mrs. has been bitten by the photo bug, does that mean she's more supportive of Nikon Acquisition Syndrome? Any tips you can give me on getting my other half on board?

Actually, to be fair, she's not too bad given that I just got permission to pick up a very low mileage second D800/MB-D12 today. Just got to find the £££ to square the credit card bill next month

Dunno, I'm from the 'ask for forgiveness' school. Last wedding she queries "how come I have to
shoot with flash?" (D5100/kit lens) Got her a D600 and picked up da Sigster...she prefers a zoom
so it's all good. Guess the oldest granddaughter's gettin' a camera.

She never used to notice when I'd switched gear around, but she's gettin' wise to it these days so I have to be a little more 'creative', ahem... Looks like my old Dad's gonna be rockin' a low click D7100 after Christmas too I never could get used to that Toshiba sensor... Almost bought another D7k, but after a few more recent paid gigs I figured what the heck, another D800 will be easier

btw, I noticed that the bokeh balls on this lens has a tiny hair line on each one of them. Can you guys try yours and see if you're getting the same thing? Just tried it on 2 camera bodies and both have the same "hair" thing. It looks like this:

I noticed the EXACT same thing on my OOF boke balls as well. I was thinking there was some fod/dust/hair in my lens. It's comforting to know that it isn't just my lens. I think it's the character/design of the lens. I'll post a sample or two with my "hairy" bokeh when I have some time to myself (hopefully...) on the computer today.

Here's the bokeh balls from mine. More sort of 'onion ring' in mine, but certainly a defined oval-ish shape in the middle....

Below is a sample with the "hairy" boke balls. This photo was a quick snapshot, nothing special to write home about. It's not even focused right. :P

Looks like the molded aspheric in your copies all came from the same mold - Panasonic has discussion of how they hand polish the lens molds to remove onion ring bokeh and perhaps the mold that Sigma used has this surface defect that shows up in all your copies.

Braved the cold Scottish weather with my Dad tonight to help him capture some photos of a local landmark/sculpture with his new D7100. Managed a few of my own before my fingers gave up......

EDIT: uploaded from my Android tablet and have no idea why the second two photos are rotated by 90 degrees.....

EDIT 2: Yay! Fixed at last......

I hadn't realised it until now, but apparently the 'Kelpies' sculpture is the largest equine sculpture in the world, standing over 30 metres (~100ft) tall.
