My wife has started taking pictures for family and friends. She has a Nikon d7100 with a kit 18-55 and nikon 50 mm. I'm looking for a lens to replace her kit lens that less than $700. Any help you can give is great help

New or used Nikon 16-85 VR or spend about $40 more and get a new 24-85 f/2.8-4. Or, get an 85 1.8g.

The question that you need to ask yourself is what are you not getting with the existing lens. Also, are you looking for a lens in the same range? Once those questions are answered then I think everyone here can give you some better suggestions.

Either Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS or Nikon 17-55mm f2.8. I always buy used. If she has no off camera flash, that would give her MASSIVELY more options than just a lens. I shoot weddings and portraits, was using D7100 and Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 for that, but the most important gear I have for portraits is my off camera flash system.

Sigma 17-50 f2.8 or as mentioned Nikon 17-55 f2.8 used. If you go Sigma you could add something on the long end, like the Nikon 70-300 VR. If your wife likes the primes, the 35 f1.8 DX is a nice option.

The first lens that I would have mentioned would have been the Nikkor 17-55 but I thought it would be beyond the budget. But after checking eBay maybe not. I have thousands of fantastic images from this lens before switching to full frame. Its fast, the color and contrast are awesome, and it's built like a tank.

Either ebay, or here. The past five weeks I've purchased over $4,000 in lenses, all used. Half came from here, half came from ebay.

Sigma 17-50 OS or Nikkor 16-85VR.

Sigma for speed/quality, Nikkor for all-round general use & flexibility.

The Nikkor 17-55 is wildly over-priced for its performance, the Sigma is cheaper new than the Nikkor is used and the Sigma is superior in all regards except weather sealing (better optics, OS, as fast or faster AF).

Sigma for quality, good one. I'll give you the Sigma is cheap. I take it you owned a 17-55 and compared the two?

Before switching to full frame the 17-55 was my workhorse at 7 years old and over 400,000 image on it, and I still git 70% of the original price for it. Very sharp.

You should look for the 'Made in the USA' ones, no import duty

OK OK ! I couldn't help myself and I know he's actually doing the right thing to come on here for advice and should be commended for buying his wife a lens she'll love. Sorry Rameagle

Yes. Made in Japan is great, many people prefer that though TBH if Nikon are running a factory anywhere then materials and QC should be identical, but many buyers still prefer Made in Japan labels on their Nikon lenses.

If you're talking about the 17-55 Nikkor I would get a good used one from B&H or KEH. You will spend a little more but they will give you a short warranty. If you get a 9 or 9+ you be golden and your wife will love you even more.

Meike Speedlight MK910, it's a Chinese copy (very well made) of the Nikon 910 and has everything that the Nikon 910 has ..... but costs a helluva lot less. Great flash.

If you want to save a little money the SB-700. If you want the best, get the Nikon SB-910 and don't look back. The SB-910 is fantastic if you need the extra power. Either way Nikon's flash system is wonderful. It's one of the reasons to buy Nikon in the first place.

If you want a crappy Chinese knock-off that ripped off the manufacturer who did all the design, engineering and marketing on, get that. They even steal their part numbers.

No denying that is true in many cases. Also no denying that you can go the Nikon route and get ripped off that way, on price, instead.
