Thought I'd bring this old thread up to the top as I just purchased a high mileage body with 215K shutter count for $1025 all in. Granted this includes a 3rd party charger and 2 batteries with nothing else.

From what I've read 1D IV was released in Q4 2009 so nearly 6 years to reach the $1K price point.

I can't really understand why current prices are so high - I bought a mint used one (<10,000 clicks) for C$2000 shortly after they were discontinued - that's about US$1500 at the current exchange rate.

At 70% of it's original value after 6 years, anything below $1500 seems like a bargain today IMO. The 7d introduced right before 1d4 has lost 75% of value ($425-$500), so the depreciation seems about normal. Nikon d3s still go for above $1500. I'd still take 1d4 over a 7d2 any day for less money.

One reason is that it's the last 1-series body with the real, red focus dots. Not the new LCD flashy dots like on my X. Trying to focus at night on older bodies was much easier. The low light capability of the 1D4 with the actual dots, mixed with the 16mp output and 10fps makes that body a great value and tool when shooting dark venues and night events. It's also the last 1.3X crop body, so people who needed the reach but also didn't want the tiny finder of the 7D/7D2 are holding on to those bodies.

How about because it was around $5,000 when new, and it still takes great images and has great AF tracking.

Still the only compromise between FF & 1.6x. i.e. best 1.3x DSLR in world TODAY.

No one will argue the technical merit of the 1DIV but it's market value it now in doubt. Many people have discovered the rather capable 7D2 or have graduated to the 1DX. It's inevitable, I'm afraid. I do know that I tried to fire sale mine here recently and there was zip for interest. I wound up trading it, straight up, for a low mileage 1DS III, which I really enjoy...

YMMV

I ended up with the 7d2 over the 1DIV. Both have their advantages. I might prefer the 1DIV at a significant cost savings, but those are hard to find. In my view, the 1DIV needs to take a price tumble to be reasonable again. 1DIIIs are now downright affordable. Hopefully, after a 1DX successor is finally announced, they will fall again (if you are in the market for one...).

I think 1D IIIs may have found their bottom for now. I typically buy a pro body late summer and sell in the spring after my kids sports are over. The nice low mileage 1D IIIs are in the $700 range just like I bought and sold mine for last year.

A 1Ds Mk III for $700? Are you sure it wasn't a Ds Mk II? I keep pretty good track of used prices and I have not seen one for $700. Not to say they aren't there but man that is low. I think $1200 to $1500 is closer. I would never let mine go for $700 or even $1200 for that matter.

Just got a clean 1Dslll for $900, so they're not uncommon.
