p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which 50mm lens for original 5d body?

I shoot weddings and portraits, and have used the Canon 50/1.2, 50/1.4 and the Sigma 50.1.4. I currently have the 50/1.2 which I will likely sell due to the large size / weight, and I don't find it usable at f/1.2. Here's my 50mm history with the Canon 5d bodies:

I tried two copies of the Sigma 50mm 1.4. Neither were accurate at all when focusing. Both were sold quick.

The Canon 50/1.4 was great at f/1.8 or so. Used it for years and was happy with it. Probably should have just kept this lens.

I have and currently use the Canon 50/1.2, but it really isn't overly usable for me at f/1.2. I shoot it at f/1.6 to f/1.8 or so to get better image quality.

My thoughts are to go back to the Canon 50/1.4, or maybe try the new Sigma 50/1.4? Anyone else can comment on the original 5d, and what 50 you have settled on? For the money, I just feel like having a 1.2 lens that isn't really usable at f/1.2 is a bit of a waste of money.

Has anyone successfully gotten the original Sigma 50/1.4 to work with the 5d body?

The new Sigma's a beast of a 50mm, so if you find the 50L too big and heavy you might dislike the Sigma.

I use both the 50 f/1.4 and f/1.2L on my original 5D's and both work great. Based on what you've described the f/1.4 seems like the right lens for you, so I think you know what time it is

It's a good time for premium 50s but the midrange has been sort of left in the dust.

Personally, I'd stick to the 50L, since you already have it, and it was made for portraits. Use it stopped down a little or whatever. It will yield a sharper image until f/2.8 than its siblings. Are you sure your photos are soft or are they just out of focus? 1.2 is hard to nail, especially with an older AF system. Though the 50L is not known for sharpness at 1.2. It's known for its rendering, which is also important.

The new Sigma 50 art is probably out as it's even bigger and heavier than the 50L.

If you find yourself more inspired by the 50 1.4, then I'd just go back to that lens.

Snapsy, do you get accurate, consistent focus with the 50/1.2? I don't find mine overly usable until f/1.8 or f/2. Also, is your f/1.2 somewhat soft at f/1.2?

Have you had your lens calibrated to your 5d body?

If you're around 30, we might have had some classes together (though I went to Kodiak for high school).

I have a particular 5D body that focuses amazingly well with my 50L copy - precise at all distances. My other 5D copies are a bit less precise with the same 50L. But if you're buying a new 50L you should be able to send it in with your body to Canon to get it right.

+1, all DSLR well calibrated cam will work fine with 50L. Just don't AF them too far off center whenever you stopping aperture down in close distance. Here is a 5d2 & 50L wide open sample: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8192/8143993084_9696337c75_o.jpg

I bought a 50 1.2L in 2008 but focus was a bit iffy on my 5D. I got lots of great keepers but only mt EF 50 1.4 USM missed focus more often. Oddly, with each camera upgrade, 50 1.2L AF accuracy improved and it rarely misses on my 6D or 70D. Still more fussy than most lenses but the MA feature made a significant sharpness improvement at F1.2, the aperture I use most of the time.
