Can anyone recommend any soft boxes that will work with the Profoto B1? I know anything umbrella like will work such as Paul C Buff's parabolic umbrella, but how about large soft boxes? I found a solution to small soft boxes listed below but not large ones.

I have found that these boxes work with the this mount.

Everyone has their own opinion on third party gear. I own a lot myself, including a few Cowboy Studio pieces. Maybe their softboxes are OK? But I've seen so much sh***y equipment from them I just refuse to buy it anymore. Personally I think it's companies like them that give third party knockoffs a bad name. Just my opinion.

On the flipside, I absolutely love my Fotodiox softboxes. They are extremely well built and relatively inexpensive. Not really much more than that Cowboy Studio that you linked, but it looks like it's a whole different level of build quality. The only issue with the Fotodiox boxes is that they don't tear down easily. So you need space where you can leave them assembled.

This is one of the ones I have, it's a beast:

You can get them in just about any size you want.

Thanks Skirball, I do have a small Fotodiox soft box. Totally forgot about them. I will look at what Fotodiox has to offer. Thanks for the heads up. After spending $2500 on a light kit, its hard to spring $400 for a soft box. $226 on a zoom reflector, plus $229.00 on extra B1 batteries.

Photoflex is durable and reasonably priced. Chimera is a little more expensive, but definitely worth having in your gear bag.

If Profoto's too expensive, Chimera is going to be too expensive. The majority of Profoto's boxes are cheaper than Chimera's.

That being said, given the difficulty of hitting $400 in the RFi line... Adam37, you're looking at the RFi softboxes, right? The HR softboxes are Heat Resistant boxes for use with hot lights (and a pricetag to match the durability).

Yes, the RFI boxes are the ones I was looking at. I know they have fiber glass rods and things but still even $243.00 is a little steep. I don't mind getting a little less quality of material and baby it but get good soft light. I would think I could get two soft boxes for $243.00

I bought the Fotodiox soft boxes for my Alien Bees in 2012 and they are still great. Especially for $80

They have their rigid ones as well. Like I mentioned above, you're not going to want to put these together and tear them down for every use, but if you have a place to store them they're great. Very durable and well bit piece of kit given the cost:

That actually looks pretty good. I could use that speed ring too to try other soft boxes that are similar with the rods. Awesome,

Thanks,

I highly recommend trying one. I was blown away by how sturdy they were, compared to some of the other generics I've tried, at the same price point. Best of luck.

Aurora softboxes have worked well for me. You can get white or silver version too. Grids are cheap as well if that matters. I should mention a Profoto XL Rapid box too from Westcott that I use. Great light although its not cheap.

tallyns.com carries Aurora and they ship all over.

I just got received the Fotodiox octabox and it is great. Very durable material, but one thing is it is a pain in the arse to put together. Wow, I was sweating by the time I got that last rod in place.

Heh. Sorry, should have warned you about that. But that's why I mentioned that you're not going to be putting it together and tearing it down for every shoot. In fact, I don't think I ever took mine back apart after getting it together.

Skirball, I didn't take it apart. I was afraid to. I tried to pull the rod out and it was so tight, I was afraid it was going to pop me in the face. I just threw it in the shed.

You need this with a Profoto insert.

A well-made speed ring is a lifetime investment, and if it saves an eye from being poked out, so much the better. The Chimera quick-release SR is all that, and makes SB assembly/breakdown as easy as an umbrella—no joke. These are expensive, but I simply cannot use anything else.

I have Profoto versions, but every mount is supported. Construction is all metal.

That speed ring looks awesome. I spent all my photo money and now its Christmas money time. I'm going to have to pickup that ring.

I use Fotodiox softboxes as well, and they make a series that uses an umbrella style mechanism, so they assemble and disassemble in just a few seconds. I love them!
