p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Just un-boxed the new Sigma 150-600 OS Sport for Nikon. My first empressions

The Sigma 150-600 OS Sport for Nikon has just arrived in my store today so time to see if this lens can out perform my Tamron SP 150-600.

Just from the un-boxing the first thing I noticed was that the build quality is nothing short of top notch and the tripod collar rotates with machine type tolerances with no slop even when collar lock is left in the loose position.
This is indeed a larger and heaver lens then the Tamron so it's not a lens you want to shoot handheld for any long period of time. The other nice touch is the lens foot is held in place with 4 cap screws just like the larger factory primes, so you know what that means Arca swiss replacement foots should be available from RRS and other brands like Wimberly, Kirk and Jobu soon enough. However the stock lens foot is rock solid to begin with but my only gripe here is that the collar is not removable if you want to shed of some of the weight for handheld shooting.

I'm doing some IQ testing tomorrow with my D4 and D800e side by side with my Tamron to see if it performs as good as it looks.

Very curious to see how it stacks up against the tamron. Especially 400mm+ at longer distances.

Sigma lenses pretty much all built like a tank, therefore heavy. On another forum this lens is outperforming the Tamron, which I expected. Interested to hear your comparative take with samples please.

Looks nice and solid. Myself, I'd never even consider a f5~6.3 configured lens.

I don't think you are going to want to do that, pretty much the only way I have found to carry guys like this around is using the foot as a handle.

The Tamron is hard to beat at that price point so the Sigma has a tall order to fill in my books and is it that worth the extra $1000!! Well if I base it on build quality it sure does but can it out perform the Tamron in IQ and focusing speed! I really hope so. Stay tuned for results.

Your right I never remove the collar of my Tamron but for some they like the option of removing it. Not a deal breaker for me but the option of doing so would have been nice. I like options

I have had mine for a few weeks now, never used the Tamron but will be very interested to see how it compares. I love the files from the D810 with this lens, both in ff and 1.5 crop mode. Not so much with the D7100 for some reason.

Looking forward to your impressions!

That extra weather sealing it has over the Tamron can come in handy. I hope I can get one soon to test out.

Can you measure the total length of the lens for purposes of putting it in a bag? Would appreciate it. I travel a lot. I'm also interested in this lens as I have the Tamron on back order

I love my 80-400, but I've had my eye on this one - keep us posted!

You're right. The Sigma doesn't weigh enough and it doesn't cost enough.

I'm hoping that this lens proves to be as good as their other offerings of late. If this would be a good alternative to the 80-400 af-s, I might have to get out a credit card. The $700 difference buys a lot of donuts and coffee.

Is it sharp compared to the telephoto zooms (thinking Nikon 80-400 V2, 200-400/4 V2)?

Found out that they put the focal length zoom ring closer towards front element, and that the manual fine-tune zoom ring is closer to lens mount (basically reverse order as on a 70-200 or any Nikon's telephotos)... Horrid decision.

Are the zoom rotations the Canon way (opposite that of Nikon's) as well?

Saw some images here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2014/10/24/sigma-150-600mm-sport-hands-on-preview-of-sigmas-latest-massive-sigmonster and they look really good for a super-zoom such as a 150-600. Still curious about the zoom ring rotation though.

You'll want that zoom ring positioned further out to keep the lens balanced as like most zooms of it's type the lens' center of gravity moves away from the camera when zooming toward 600mm. And the rings do turn in the proper Canon direction .

After holding one at PDN/PP it is a heavy beast and with full zoom extension at 600mm VERY long, feels weird to balance and cumbersome. I still want one... sortof.
